Sam Kerr scored her 'favourite type of goal' against Wolfsburg to help the Blues claim a momentous victory in Germany, and advance to the Champions League quarter-finals.
The Blues knew that victory at the AOK Stadion would guarantee a place in the last eight, but that task wouldn't be easy against a Wolfsburg side that had never previously lost on home soil to an English club.
It became even harder for Sonia Bompastor's side when Alexandra Popp powered home a half-volley in the 16th minute. But Chelsea dug in and showcased the resilience that has defined the team for several seasons – and resulted in countless trophy successes.
We pulled level on the stroke of half time when Lucy Bronze rose highest in the penalty area to guide a corner into the net and, just after the hour mark, our pressure eventually told as Kerr expertly guided a header across goal and into the top corner following a cross from Johanna Rytting Kaneryd.
Wolfsburg pushed for a late leveller and came close on several occasions, but the Blues were able to stay firm to secure victory and three points that take us directly into the Champions League quarter-finals.
'They’re a great team and we struggled against them out there at times,' reflected Kerr after our win. 'Tonight was all about making the top four [of the league phase] and getting the win.
'Scoring feels nice, I actually said to the girls when I was coming off that I’ve not scored a header like that in a while. So not only was it great to get the win and secure the top four, it was good to score as well. They’re my favourite type of goal – and every Champions League goal is special.
'Someone told me we’re the first English team to win here, so that’s really nice. There have been lots of surprises tonight, and I’m really proud of that.'
By finishing in the top four and qualifying directly for the quarter-finals, Chelsea have avoided the jeopardy of a two-legged play-off stage and have ensured two fewer matches in an already busy fixture schedule.
'It’s nice to qualify and have two fewer games to play, even though we’ve got a big squad,' explained Kerr. 'It’s great to get over the line and it’ll help us focus on the league without those extra matches.
'We had to dig deep [against Wolfsburg] and I think everyone did, including the players who came on. It was a real team effort. We had to fight until the very end.'
