Sam Kerr says it is a 'privilege to be on the same level' as Fran Kirby after the Australian international matched the Chelsea legend's tally of 63 goals for the Blues in the Women's Super League.
A goal in each half from Kerr against Everton yesterday helped the Blues to an important 4-1 win in the WSL, and saw her draw level with Kirby's tally in the league while a Blue.
Kerr is also closing in on Kirby in terms of all-time Chelsea goals: Kerr has netted 113 times in all competitions in 154 total appearances, while her former team-mate holds the club record of 116.
'I have a lot of respect for Fran,' said Kerr after our win at Goodison Park. 'She's a great player, not only for this club but for women's football in general.
'I've had some very fun memories with her, so it feels fitting that I'm level with her. Hopefully, I can beat it, but I’m very privileged to be on the same level as Fran.'
Kerr was clinical against Everton, scoring in the sixth minute of the match, and again two minutes after half-time. Ellie Carpenter and Erin Cuthbert netted our third and fourth goals of the 4-1 victory, and their team-mate was keen to share the glory.
'It was a tough game,' Kerr said. 'I thought we started really well, and I think they were striker goals: getting played through, and a one-touch finish. But I thought the whole team played really well. We had to grind there a few times, but the win's the most important today, so I’m happy with it.'
Head coach Sonia Bompastor explained in her post-match press conference that she had asked the players to show more intensity in the second half, something which was evident from the restart.
'We needed to pick up a little bit and clean things up,' she said. 'But I think the biggest thing was that the intensity needed to be raised by all of us.
'You saw when we do that, we can really explode and score more goals. We probably should have scored more in the first half and probably more in the second, but a 4-1 win's pretty good.
'Every win's important. We've just got to finish the season out strong and keep it in our hands and, you know, wins like today do that.'
