Sam Kerr has received her first Australia call-up in 692 days following long-term injury and head coach Joe Montemurro has described it as 'a special moment not just for the team but for Australian football'.

Kerr had not officially been called up by Australia since November 2023 due to the ACL injury she suffered in January 2024, although she did train alongside her national team-mates during the last camp in Perth as she continued her rehab.

The striker returned for Chelsea this season and has now officially been called up by the Matildas for the double header with Wales and England on these shores later this month, alongside fellow Blue Ellie Carpenter.

Head coach Montemurro said: 'We are excited to bring this group together for two important fixtures in the October window where we have the opportunity to challenge ourselves, strengthen our cohesion, and continue shape the way we play.

'The squad showcases the depth we are looking to build, by utilising experienced players who continue to set high standards alongside the next generation of Matildas players.

'It will be Australia’s first time competing against Wales and there is a competitive history with England, so both games will provide different challenges to test the team, our playing style and the way be play together.

'Having Sam back in the squad is a special moment - not just for the team, but for Australian football. Her leadership and presence are invaluable as we continue building toward the AFC Women’s Asian Cup 2026 and beyond.

'The team and my expectations in October are that we will continue to work hard, be humble and grow as a collective unit.'

Australia will face Wales at Cardiff City Stadium on Saturday, 25 October (kick-off 2.00pm BST), before facing the Lionesses at Derby's Pride Park on Tuesday 28 October (kick-off 7.00pm BST).

We will bring you news of the other Chelsea players called up for this month's internationals over the coming week as they are announced.
