After scoring a stoppage-time goal against London City Lionesses at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, Sam Kerr’s passionate reaction to finding the back of the net for the 101st time for Chelsea said it all.

The striker’s looping finish over the goalkeeper from the corner of the penalty area took all of the tension away after the Blues had been defending a 1-0 lead into the period of additional time at the end of the game.

Kerr returned to action after 634 days away at Aston Villa in mid-September and scored her 100th goal for Chelsea when she came off the bench late on in the 3-1 victory, but she had not managed to find the back of the net during her substitute appearances since.

The striker was then called up to the Matildas squad during October’s international break and started both of Australia's friendly matches, allowing Kerr to take a step forward in terms of sharpening up her striker’s instincts. On Saturday, Chelsea reaped the rewards.

‘It was nice to be back from the international break,’ said Kerr afterwards. ‘It’s always good to score, and it’s even better when it’s at the Bridge.

‘I feel good, actually. I feel like I'm slowly coming back to myself. Every game and every training session, I feel like I'm getting better. I'm definitely going in the right direction.

‘I just saw that the keeper was off her line, but I just thought – striker’s instinct, just have a hit! And luckily, it went over the defender's head.’

Saturday’s match against newly-promoted London City was the first of a new Women’s Super League derby between the two sides.

A week on from that clash, and the Blues will face a much more established rival when we travel to the Emirates Stadium to face Arsenal. Kerr appreciated facing a new cross-city opponent at the weekend and is looking forward to another match in the capital on Saturday.

‘Obviously, it's nice for us to have another London team in the league,' she said after the victory. 'The first thing I thought of is it's less travel for us!

‘But no, it's good to see the women's game growing and a new team in the league. We need more of that to take the women’s game forward.

‘It's always tough to go to the Emirates. Arsenal are a good team and we have a lot of respect for them. Like I said, it’s a London derby, so we'll always be up for it. The girls have had really good results against them in the last few games, so hopefully we can continue that.’

Chelsea remain unbeaten in all competitions this season, and with that, head coach Sonia Bompastor has continued her undefeated record in domestic competitions, which spanned the entirety of last season.

The Blues have only dropped points in 1-1 draws against Manchester United in the WSL and FC Twente in the Champions League so far this season. Kerr acknowledged those who have suggested we might not yet be at our best level in terms of performances, while also pointing out we are exactly where we need to be in both competitions.

‘We have a really deep squad,’ she concluded. ‘That's the beauty of this team. It’s only the start of the season, but I think the girls are playing well; we've not dropped many points.

‘The standards for Chelsea are so high that I get what people are saying, but at the same time, we're still sitting where we want to in the league. In the Champions League, we're in contention to be in that top four, where we want to be.’
