Robert Sanchez has reflected on his Chelsea debut, labelling the experience as ‘amazing’ as well as revealing when he was told he would start the season opener against Liverpool.

The Spaniard recently joined the Blues from Brighton, brought in to compete with Kepa Arrizabalaga for the No.1 shirt, but after news broke that the latter was set to join Real Madrid on loan and Sanchez was duly named in the starting line-up by Mauricio Pochettino.

The new Blue performed well in the 1-1 home draw and reflected on his debut, as well as thanking the Chelse fans for the warm reception he received from them.

‘It felt amazing to be out there for Chelsea and the fans have welcomed me really well, so I want to thank them for the reception,’ Robert explained after the final whistle.

‘It was about getting my timing back in terms of game-time but I felt really confident, no nerves at all and since I joined a week ago I’ve felt really welcomed by all the boys and I think we did a good game against Liverpool. It was a good start to the season and something for us to build on.

‘I think we started the game a little slow actually but full credit to the boys, we really upped our levels – especially in the second half.

‘We moved the ball well, created some good chances and could have got the win. We’ll take the point though and move on to the next game.’

With Kepa’s move to La Liga confirmed on Monday morning, it begs the question when was Sanchez told by the head coach – a man he is loving playing under - that he would be starting the fixture?

‘I was told a couple of days ago that I would be starting but this is football, you always have to be ready because things can change very quickly,’ stressed Robert.

‘I trained well with the team all week and I was ready to play. Working under Mauricio has been great so far, he’s an amazing manager and he makes us feel like a big family.

‘He pulled the process together and I’m so happy with my choice to come here to Chelsea.’
