While moving to England may have been an adjustment in practical terms for Sandy Baltimore, the France international has thrived on the pitch.
Playing in a more advanced role compared to where we have mainly seen her this season, Baltimore was instrumental in Chelsea’s 3-0 win over Manchester United in the Women's FA Cup final on Sunday, scoring twice and providing the assist for Catarina Macario’s 84th-minute header.
It’s not the first time this season the France international has come up with the goods in a big game. It’s hard to believe this is only her first season in English football, having risen through the youth sector at Paris Saint-Germain and spent eight seasons in the first team.
‘It’s been a great season,’ Baltimore reflected. ‘I played in almost every game. English football is really good because there are so many fans at the games and the English love their football, so you feel supported.
‘The difference I'd say, compared to French football, is the intensity.’
Baltimore joined Chelsea last summer, just as Bompastor took over in the dugout. While the pair were on opposite sides of a rivalry in France, they have forged a strong relationship throughout the season at Chelsea.
The coach has deployed the 25-year-old at left wing-back for much of the campaign, where she played in the PSG Under-19s before turning pro, but in the latter stages of this season, she has featured in the front three, where she is more accustomed to playing.
‘It's true, I've always been rivals with Sonia when I played for PSG and she was at Lyon,' Baltimore continued. ‘It was often a battle between us.
‘But now having her as a coach is great because she already knew me and she trusts me. It’s allowed me to express myself on the pitch and play much better.'
In addition to her Player of the Match-winning performance in the FA Cup final, Baltimore scored the first goal in the stunning 3-0 comeback win over Manchester City in the Women’s Champions League quarter-final at Stamford Bridge and netted the goal that put us back at 2-1 in Barcelona during the semi-final.
Her goal against Arsenal saw us win 2-1 at the Emirates, and she assisted Lucy Bronze for the header that sealed the title away at Manchester United at the end of April.
‘I was so happy to score in the big games this season,’ says Baltimore. ‘But ultimately, it's a team effort and we're all united.
‘I feel valued and important in this team. It’s been a great first season, given that we won the Treble, and we're delighted to be undefeated. It wasn't easy because all the matches are very difficult here. The teams in England are very strong.’
