Top-of-the-table Chelsea are back in action at Stamford Bridge on Saturday lunchtime for a newly-created derby fixture against London City Lionesses, and here's why you can't afford to miss it!
Witness history
Saturday’s match against London City Lionesses at Stamford Bridge will be the first-ever league meeting between the two sides.
The Blues have met London City twice before in cup competitions, winning 6-0 in 2015 and by a 5-0 margin in 2021. Since then, our opponents have been through a period of significant change.
Michelle Kang stepped in to purchase the club in December 2023, explaining that she saw 'tremendous possibility' in the team. It only took 18 months from the point of acquisition to secure promotion from the second tier as London City Lionesses became the first independent side with no men's team attached to them to play in the WSL.
The ambitious newly-promoted outfit now face a Chelsea side who have won the last six consecutive WSL titles. Those in the stands for the Saturday lunchtime clash at Stamford Bridge will be the only fans to witness the very beginning of a brand new derby rivalry in person.
Enjoy an alcoholic drink in the stands
Saturday's match offers supporters a best-in-class experience, as they can enjoy alcoholic drinks in the stands at Stamford Bridge as part of the Barclays WSL Fan Choice trial.
This applies to all lower-tier stands and hospitality areas, except for our dedicated family area in the East Stand lower tier.
See some of the biggest stars in the women’s game
This Saturday represents a chance for fans to see some of Chelsea’s six Euro 2025 winners in action and our opponents also have their share of European champions in their squad.
The Blues had more representatives in this summer’s England squad (six) than any other domestic team as Aggie Beever-Jones, Lucy Bronze, Niamh Charles, Hannah Hampton, Lauren James and Keira Walsh all played a role in securing the trophy back in July.
Chelsea’s squad is laden with internationals, as shown at the end of October when 18 of our players were called up to their respective senior sides.
You'll be able to cheer on your favourite Lionesses from Tuesday night's win over Australia, including goalscorers Bronze and Beever-Jones, as well as Sam Kerr and Ellie Carpenter, who were in action for the Matildas.
Our opponents London City also have their fair share of famous names in their squad, having snapped up experienced France midfielder Grace Geyoro in the summer window, as well as ex-Manchester United captain Katie Zelem, and other new signings from Roma, Real Madrid, Angel City, Barcelona, PSG and OL Lyonnes.
London City also have European champions in their ranks in Nikita Parris and Danielle van de Donk, Maria Perez was part of the Spain squad that won the World Cup in 2023, and there are other other players who - like Chelsea - have reached major European, world and Olympic finals.
Fun for all the family
Saturday's match is the perfect way for families to round off the half-term holiday. Activities on the East Stand lower concourse will include face painters, balloon modellers and roaming entertainment, with something for everyone to enjoy.
It is also a chance to inspire the next generation of fans and players as they watch some of the world's best battle it out at the Bridge.
International team-mates become rivals
When the match kicks off on Saturday, the international break will be over, and players who had featured alongside each other will become rivals once more.
Sweden captain Kosovare Asllani could come up against Chelsea duo Johanna Rytting Kaneryd and Nathalie Bjorn, and there are also representatives from the Netherlands on both sides, too.
London City’s Van de Donk could face her Oranje team-mates Veerle Buurman and Wieke Kaptein on the pitch at Stamford Bridge, while Parris and Zelem will come up against their long-time England team-mates.
French connections
This may be a newly-created London derby, but some underlying links to France underpin a fascinating clash between the teams. Blues boss Sonia Bompastor worked under the ownership of Michele Kang during her spell at Lyon. The American businesswoman is the majority owner of the WSL side, as well as OL Lyonnes in France and Washington Spirit in the NWSL.
Kang appointed former PSG boss Jocelyn Precheur in the summer of 2024. Whilst in charge at the Parisian side, the coach faced Bompastor in the women’s top flight in France and had Sandy Baltimore in his squad before the France international moved to Chelsea in July 2024.
Baltimore and Oriane Jean-Francois plays alongside London City’s Grace Geyoro in the France women’s national team but will become a rival on Saturday lunchtime as their respective clubs face off against each other.
