The FA Cup quarter-finals evoke plenty of happy memories for Chelsea fans, and ahead of our next such tie against Port Vale this weekend, we have delved into the archives and selected six of our most memorable.
The Valiants visit Stamford Bridge for the first time in nearly a century, with a place in the semis at Wembley later this month up for grabs.
Chelsea have advanced from our past six FA Cup quarter-final ties – and nine of the past ten – and we will be hoping to continue that good run at this stage of the competition on Saturday evening.
To whet your appetite for the game, relive these legendary matches and moments from the past 30 years…
Trademark Sparky special | March 1997
The Blues’ FA Cup run in 1997 had already contained dramatic victories over Liverpool and Leicester and the next stop on our path to Wembley was Fratton Park, home of Division One Portsmouth.
It was billed as a tricky quarter-final tie, but Mark Hughes settled any nerves with a blistering finish on the run. Frank Leboeuf provided the assist with a searching, outside-the-boot pass that split Pompey’s defence open and typified the Frenchman’s class; the strike that followed from Sparky was textbook, setting the tone for an ultimately comfortable 4-1 win.
JT opens his Chelsea account | February 2000
John Terry sits in the top 20 of Chelsea goalscorers with an impressive tally of 67, and the very first of those came in a 5-0 FA Cup quarter-final win over Gillingham, then in the Second Division.
It was a goal we would see many times in the future, as an inswinging corner – from captain Dennis Wise – was headed into the net by JT, who timed his run to perfection and celebrated with those inside the Matthew Harding Stand.
Running riot at the Lane | March 2002
Claudio Ranieri’s Blues had suffered a humiliating 5-1 defeat away to Tottenham in the League Cup semi-final second leg – our first defeat to Spurs in over a decade – but there was to be no repeat when the FA Cup draw took us back to White Hart Lane.
In fact, we dismantled our hosts with a performance that underlined our determination to right the wrongs of a few weeks earlier. William Gallas prodded us in front and Eidur Gudjohnsen netted a pair of cool one-on-one finishes either side of a Graeme Le Saux piledriver.
Epic Sheva strike | March 2007
At the same venue, in what would prove our final ever FA Cup game at White Hart Lane, Andriy Shevchenko broke the deadlock with as sweet a strike as you could wish to see.
The Ukrainian cut inside onto his left foot and from the angle of the 18-yard box blasted a rising drive into the opposite far corner, setting us on our way to a gritty 2-1 win in a season where we would go on to win the first FA Cup at the new Wembley.
Alex finishes clinical counter | March 2009
Our maiden and to date only visit to the Ricoh Arena in Coventry came under the guidance of Guus Hiddink during our superb finish to what had otherwise been a sticky 2008/09 campaign.
Didier Drogba opened the scoring against the Championship side and we made sure of the victory 20 minutes from time. A swift counter-attack concluded with Ricardo Quaresma’s superb centre being swept into the net by the unlikely figure of Alex, who had busted a gut to get from one end of the pitch to the other.
Ba brilliance at the Bridge | April 2013
Chelsea and champions-elect Manchester United had played out a tight 2-2 draw at Old Trafford, so the teams reconvened at Stamford Bridge on Easter Monday for what would prove our last FA Cup sixth round replay.
Again there was little to separate the sides, with Petr Cech producing a stunning save to deny Javier Hernandez, while at the other end there was nothing David De Gea could do to keep out Demba Ba’s acrobatic volley that ultimately decided the contest.
