Sjoeke Nusken is ready for a tough challenge against Arsenal on Saturday, but is confident Chelsea can emulate last year’s result at the Emirates Stadium.

The Blues midfielder knows exactly what it takes to beat the Gunners, having been named in Sonia Bompastor’s starting line-up in both of our wins against them last season.

Our first of those encounters came in October last year, when Chelsea pulled off a 2-1 win over our rivals at the Emirates Stadium. On Saturday, we return to the scene of that victory, hoping to come away with three points once again.

‘It was so difficult to win both games against Arsenal last year, considering their quality,’ said the Germany international. ‘They won the Champions League last season, which just shows how hard it was.

‘Saturday will be very tough for us. In the league, they are maybe not at their best so far, but I think once we get out on the pitch, we will do everything to win this game, and we want to show everything we can do.

‘It will be a different game from last year because they have a lot of new players, and we have some new players, so it’s difficult to compare.’

On a personal level, Nusken has enjoyed plenty of success against Arsenal. During her first campaign with the Blues, she netted a brace at Stamford Bridge, which helped us to an emphatic 3-1 victory.

Last season, what began as a hopeful idea for an interesting celebration quickly became reality when Mayra Ramirez netted after just three minutes at the Emirates Stadium.

Nusken immediately joined the Colombian striker, marking the beginning of a tradition that is set to continue once her team-mate is fit enough to return to action.

‘It's always a special game against Arsenal,’ Nusken continued. ‘I have a lot of good memories when we have played against them, and hopefully there will be some more on Saturday!

‘It was really nice when I scored the two goals at Stamford Bridge, with my family in the stands. With the celebration last season, it was just a random thing in the first instance.

‘We started by chatting about it every evening before a game. This was the first time we did it. We thought we wanted to do something out of the ordinary in a special game, and we were lucky that Mayra scored, and it meant we could do it together!

‘It was a nice thing to do, and something good to remember. Now, Mayra unfortunately has her injury, but when she’s back, we’ll start it again.’

The midfielder has started in Chelsea’s last two fixtures. The first was a start at right-back in our 4-0 win over Paris FC, and the second was our 2-0 victory over newly established derby rival London City Lionesses.

Such versatility has become a theme during Nusken’s time with the Blues, and while her normal role is in the central midfield area, she has now played at both left and right centre-back, right-back, left-wing and as a central striker.

Key to her adaptability is keeping an open mind and not only accepting a changing role within the side, but actively relishing the role.

‘I love playing football,’ she smiles. ‘The whole reason to do that is to be out there on the pitch. When the team needs me at it right back, for example, then I will play there. I will always try my best. I play wherever I’m needed.

‘Sometimes it's easier for me to play in a different position. It’s a shock to the system in a good way, and I can respond automatically. There’s less pressure. When I play in my normal role in midfield, I’m thinking more about what I need to do, and I can’t afford to be wrong because it’s my position.’
