Having started every match on the way to winning this season’s Women’s League Cup final, it was fitting that midfielder Sjoeke Nusken took a moment to enjoy lifting the trophy at Ashton Gate on Sunday.

The Blues recorded an incredible 9-1 win over Liverpool in the quarter-final before putting in a faultless defensive performance in the semi-final to eke out a 1-0 victory away at Manchester City.

Our 2-0 triumph over Manchester United in the final was the icing on the cake, as Nusken added another winner’s medal to her collection to make a total of five since she joined Chelsea in 2023.

When we spoke to the midfielder after the match, it was abundantly clear that she loves playing football – and winning matches – with Chelsea.

‘It feels amazing,’ she said. ‘It's always special to win a trophy with this team, with this club. It's always an honour to play in a final as well, and to win it makes it even more special.

‘Of course, this helps us going forward, it makes us confident. We can now put the energy from this game into the next games, and we are looking forward to playing in them. We enjoy playing football, so that's what we want.’

Only Lucy Bronze (82) registered more touches of the ball than Nusken managed with her final tally of 73, and the Germany international revealed that it was always the team’s intention to win the match with a clean sheet.

That was easier said than done against Manchester United, who have proven to be a tough opponent over recent matches, but the Blues grafted from the first minute to the last to achieve that goal.

‘When we scored the second goal, we wanted to make sure we kept a clean sheet as well,' Nusken explained.

‘We didn’t want to get a goal and then make it a little bit sloppy at the end. We wanted to keep it tight, and everyone was fighting for each other, so it was a really good performance.

‘Man United always play well. They have such a good squad. It's always a tough battle against them, and today we could score quite early thanks to a really nice goal from LJ. After that, we tried to defend everything on the line, and we managed it.’
