Gaga Slonina helped the USA book their place in the knockout stages of the FIFA Under-20 World Cup with an emphatic win over Fiji.

The young Chelsea goalkeeper already had one clean sheet to his name at the tournament, following the USA’s 1-0 win over Ecuador in their opening game, and made it two wins from as many games without conceding a goal in Argentina so far as they dismissed Fiji with a 3-0 victory this evening.

However, just as in that first match, the Americans had to be patient while their underdog opponents put up a valiant rearguard action which briefly threatened to create an upset.

Despite the USA peppering the opposition goal with 31 shots, the game was still goalless for over an hour, with Gaga Slonina coming to the rescue with a double-save following a corner just after half-time to prevent Fiji taking a shock lead.

However, his side found the first goal on 66 minutes and never looked like surrendering their lead after that point, with further late strikes in the 88th and 99th minutes adding gloss to a final scoreline reading 3-0 to the USA, which more accurately reflected their dominance of the match.

That leaves the USA on six points after two games and already certain of their place in the last 16. They next face Slovakia at 7pm (UK time) on Sunday evening in their final group game to determine who tops Group B.
