Mayra Ramirez was minutes away from firing Colombia to their first Copa America Femenina title before Brazil legend Marta saved the day and sent the game towards penalties.

Ramirez slotted into the bottom corner in the 88th minute to put Colombia 3-2 up, following a counter-attack and Linda Caicedo's pass, after the Chelsea striker had earlier done the same for the Real Madrid star.

Ramirez was then substituted with just minutes remaining and six-time world player of the year Marta - who was recalled recently at the age of 39 after a year out of the fold - came off the bench to score a stunning equaliser from 20 yards out in the sixth minute of additional time to send the game to extra-time.

Marta then scored again in the additional half an hour before Leicy Santos chipped in a free-kick in the 115th minute to ensure the match would be settled by penalties.

With Ramirez off the pitch, she could only watch on as it took 14 spot-kicks to separate the sides, with Jorelyn Carabalí's effort for Colombia saved and Luany dispatching the decisive penalty for Brazil.

Brazil have now won nine of the ten editions of the Copa America Femenina, with Argentina claiming the only other in 2006.

For Colombia, they have lost four of the last five finals, with Ramirez also in the side that lost 1-0 to Brazil three years ago.

Whist the tournament ended in disappointment once again, Ramirez's standing in the game was enhanced even further with two goals and three assists, meaning a goal involvement per match, including one of each in the final.
