Sonia Bompastor was pleased with her Chelsea side's performance in our 4-1 win over AC Milan at Kingsmeadow, and highlighted the impact made by hat-trick scorer Aggie Beever-Jones ahead of our Women’s Super League opener on Friday night at Stamford Bridge.

The boss was disappointed to concede a late goal away at Ajax earlier in the month, but this latest win combined both a dominant performance and a pleasing result.

'It was the last game before we start the season, so it was a good result, and I think in terms of performance, it is always good to score four goals,' said Bompastor. 'I think we played with intensity, which is a big thing I want to see from my team.

'In the first half, Milan were more organised and maybe fresher as well, so it was more difficult to break down their block and to open up the spaces. In the second half, we kept the ball and we produced in both the creation phase and the finishing phase.'

Aggie Beever-Jones scored a hat-trick after returning to Chelsea as a Euro 2025 winner with England, and hit the ground running.

Bompastor was delighted with the young striker and has high hopes for her in the coming campaign.

'I’m really proud of Aggie’s performances and what she's producing with us,' the Blues head coach continued. 'She's able to score and to assist and to help us get the results. I'm glad Aggie is able to focus on herself; that's something we have been talking about together.

'She's doing well, and today again, she's shown she's ready to start the new campaign. Yes, last season, we were successful, but we are starting again this season. It is an important year for her. She played a lot of minutes with us last year, had good performances, scored a lot of goals, so I hope she can continue in the same way.'

The women's transfer window closes on Thursday, and the boss was inevitably asked about the possibility of any new arrivals, having already signed Mara Alber, Ellie Carpenter and Livia Peng.

Bompastor feels that the team is already very strong, but stressed that a club like Chelsea will always be looking for opportunities in the market.

'I’m satisfied with my squad,' Bompastor confirmed. 'We already made some signings and I think, as you could see today, some of the players have already brought a lot to the team.

'The transfer window is still open, and as Chelsea Football Club, we will always be observing what’s happening and we'll stay alert to opportunities.

'My job is to make sure we find the right balance between having depth and also having healthy competition. I think with the strategy at this club, we are all aligned with where we want to go. I think it’s really important to have a mix of youth and experience in the squad, because we need to build a squad ready to compete in four competitions.

'The Champions League and the WSL are big competitions, and we need to make sure we are in a good position to compete as these two trophies are really important for us.'

Our WSL season will begin on Friday night as we take on domestic rivals Manchester City under the lights at Stamford Bridge, and Bompastor took the opportunity to once again stress the importance of our fans to her team's success.

'I enjoy sharing the emotion with the fans, and it’s really nice at the end of the game to have 10 or 15 minutes talking to them, having signatures, taking pictures, because these moments are the ones we enjoy the most,' she said. 'In your career, there are the ones that stick in your memory, and that’s why we do this job.

'Starting next week with the Man City game at Stamford Bridge, we are hoping for most of them to come and make the difference, and bring extra motivation for my players.'
