Sonia Bompastor gave some insight into the mood behind the scenes at Chelsea as we put last weekend’s heavy defeat to Manchester City behind us and bid to register a win away at Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday.

The Blues now sit 12 points behind the league leaders with eight games remaining in the Women’s Super League and face a Spurs side who we have beaten on each of the 17 occasions we have faced them in the WSL era.

While the head coach acknowledged the players looked deflated after that result, she highlighted the team had worked hard throughout the week in training and explained why the set-up may only need some minor adjustments in order to return to winning ways.

‘In the last game when you concede five goals, it's difficult and tough to take that,’ said Bompastor. ‘So sometimes, body language, by the end of the game, is a little bit difficult to read. But we are competitive players and people, and we want to make sure we don't give up.

‘We work hard with intensity. We are facing a tough moment because we are not used to losing games. But we also trust the quality we have in the squad, and I know it's small tweaks for us to be in a better position.

‘I'm confident from what I saw this week in our training sessions, we'll be able to bounce back on Sunday.’

After going unbeaten in every domestic competition last season, Bompastor faced an unusual situation when her side suffered back-to-back defeats against Arsenal and Man City in our last two fixtures.

The Chelsea head coach is a serial winner, having lifted three league titles and the Women’s Champions League trophy whilst with Lyon, and secured a domestic Treble during her first season with Chelsea.

Right now, she may be in unfamiliar waters, but is leaning on the same processes that have brought her so much success to turn her side’s fortunes around.

She said: ‘I will certainly be really difficult on myself because as I already mentioned before, I think when the team is winning, it's about the players. But when the team is losing, it's about me.

‘So, I always reflect on what I could have done better in many aspects. That doesn't change no matter if we are winning or losing games.

‘I'm someone who is very optimistic. Even when we are not getting the results we want, I make sure I always stay positive and I’m always the one who balances the mood or the energy because the players need that.

‘Right now, I’m confident and positive, even if we are not where we want to be. We know that. We are not having the results we want to get. But that's a challenge and we need to face that challenge.’
