Sonia Bompastor was pleased with her side's win over Leicester City at Kingsmeadow, but feels there is room for improvement in terms of performances.

Aggie Beever-Jones scored the only goal of the match after just seven minutes at Kingsmeadow, but the Blues were unable to penetrate Leicester's backline for the rest of the game.

Yet the head coach explained that winning without playing at our best is one of Chelsea's strengths, and praised the opposition for putting up a good fight.

'I think we all agree that the performance today was not great,' said Bompastor. 'I think that's probably one of our qualities. We won the game, but it's not enough for us. We always analyse the performance, and we always want to make sure we perform at our best. We want to get even more chances to win in a more comfortable way.

'You could see, Leicester were mentally a really good team, they were well organised, really aggressive. I think you can start to see this with every team when they play against Chelsea. They are aggressive, they have a high press, and they make things more difficult for us. We were coming into this game expecting a tough match.

'They are very comfortable out of possession of the ball, and even if they don't have the ball that much, they are okay with that. So in that context, I think when you are able to have a strong start, as we did, it's really good, but you need to score the second goal just to be more comfortable in the game.'

As the clock ticked on towards the final stages of the match, the 1-0 lead felt a little precarious, especially when Leicester forced Hannah Hampton to tip a powerful shot onto the bar in added time.

Bompastor wants her side to score more goals in future to avoid these nervy moments.

'I think this is also why we were a little bit fragile,' she continued. 'Because you just give hope to the opposition. In added time, you never know what can happen. I was confident in my players, but when you have six minutes of extra time, the other team always has at least one chance, and it happened today. It was offside in the end, but Hannah had to make a great save in that situation.

'The room for improvement in terms of performance is making sure we are involved in the final third and finishing phase to create more than what we created today.'

Sjoeke Nusken and Lexi Potter missed out on the matchday squad against Leicester, and Bompastor explained why the duo were missing.

Niamh Charles also sustained a small knock against Aston Villa, and coming in to replace her was Chelsea debutant Veerle Buurman. Bompastor was pleased with the Netherlands international defender's performance and explained why having a left-footed centre back is a real asset to her team.

'Sio had a small thing in her hamstring, but we are still assessing her,' she said. 'It happened in a training session this week. And Lexi got a twisted ankle yesterday, also in a training session. It shouldn't be too bad, but it happened yesterday, and it was too fresh for her to be scanned.'

'It was so great for Veerle to have her debut. I think she showed today she's a good player, a young player, but her performance was good. I think she was strong defensively, and she was comfortable in possession and played some good balls to her teammates.

'In terms of having a left-footed player in the back three, especially in the left centre-back position, I think it's really important because you open more space in the outside corridor, and that's something we are looking forward to.'
