Sonia Bompastor has countless reasons to be proud of her Chelsea players after ending our title-winning Women’s Super League campaign unbeaten. Yet there is one aspect of our triumph that most pleased the Blues head coach.
Bompastor arrived at Chelsea last summer looking to maintain our dominance in the WSL. We had lifted the previous five titles under Emma Hayes, securing a sixth would be an impressive feat in the French coach's debut campaign.
The Blues have done just that – and rewritten the record books. No team had previously gone unbeaten in a 22-game WSL season. No team had previously reached 60 points. What Bompastor and her players have achieved is historic.
It was a collective effort, too. While certain members of the squad featured more than others, everyone played a role in Chelsea ending the campaign as champions. And that was what Bompastor was most pleased about as she reflected, medal around her neck, on an outstanding league campaign.
She said: 'I was a player myself, so what makes me most proud this season is that it is a team performance, that everyone has contributed to our success in the league and the other competitions.
'I know all the players want to play, and I have to make the decisions because only eleven can start the game. But the rotation has been really important for us, and even against Liverpool, Ash (Ashley Lawrence) came on for the last 20 minutes and then delivered the assist for Aggie's goal.
'So everyone is part of the project, even if they don’t all start the games they want to play. This is a team performance and a team achievement.’
That was reflected in our title celebrations. Every member of the squad was involved, from Sophie Ingle and Sam Kerr, who have missed the entirety of the campaign due to ACL injuries, to Kadeisha Buchanan, Lauren James and Mia Fishel, who have missed significant parts of the season due to injury.
Each absence was felt during the campaign. Yet the depth of the Chelsea squad ensured results didn't suffer, something Bompastor highlighted as crucial to our title win.
'Even with the depth we have in the squad, to be able to achieve what we have without these big players is something really impressive,' she said.
'It shows the club is going in the right direction in terms of having a squad that can compete in every competition. I was hoping some of the players to be back and for me to manage them in some games, but it just shows how great the squad is and how great the squad is without having some big players available.’
What has been achieved in the WSL this term is a yardstick for Bompastor's side. And the Blues head coach knows that next season, she will not have the same element of surprise enjoyed this term.
'Next season will be difficult,' she said. 'Sometimes when you come into a league as a new manager, you can surprise some people. Next season I won’t surprise anyone, everyone will be ready to face Chelsea.
'So I will have to think about what we can do better to be an even better team and stay in this position. This is what we want, and it feels great to be number one.'
