Sonia Bompastor has explained why Catarina Macario hasn't travelled with the Chelsea squad for our Women's Champions League opener against FC Twente.

The American forward started our 1-1 draw with Manchester United on Friday and provided a sublime back-heeled assist for Wieke Kaptein's goal.

However, the 26-year-old hasn't made the journey to Holland for our first fixture of the newly-created league phase.

'The only one unavailable from last Friday's game is Catarina Macario, but she's okay,' Bompastor explained during her pre-match press conference.

'We decided for her not to travel with the team. She will be fine for the weekend's game against Tottenham, and all except for her, everyone who played on Friday is available.
'She (Macario) has a bit of inflammation around the Achilles. This is something we have been managing for weeks now, and we just felt maybe the best plan was for her to stay and not to have to travel with the team.'

Lucy Bronze, Niamh Charles, Naomi Girma, and Lauren James have also not travelled as they continue their respective recoveries from injury.

'They are training fully with the team now, so it's really positive news,' the Blues head said. 'It's too early for them to be involved in the game tomorrow, but they are in a good place to be available for the game against Tottenham.'

Having reached the semi-final of the Champions League last season, Bompastor detailed her aims for our European campaign ahead, which will see the Blues compete in a league phase structure for the first time.

Three games will be played at home and another three away – and we will not meet the same opposition in the league phase.

'We are really excited to start a new format in this competition,' Bompastor said. 'Playing in the Champions League is the highest level club competition, and we already said we have a lot of ambitions as a club at Chelsea.

'We want to perform at our best level in this competition and make sure we go as far as we can.'
