With the Blues just six points behind Manchester City in the Women's Super League and with 33 still to play for, it will come as no surprise to hear Sonia Bompastor state we will not be giving up on the title race any time soon. After all, our head coach explained, fighting until the very end is in the Blues' DNA.
The Blues sit in second place in the WSL table, six points behind leaders Manchester City. Yet with a crucial league match against the Cityzens to come on 1 February and 11 matches still to play, the head coach stressed there is still plenty to play for before the campaign comes to an end in May.
When we sat down for an exclusive chat with the Chelsea boss during our training camp in Portugal, she spoke with clarity and honesty over her side's current situation, explaining there would be little room for error after the winter break.
‘We are not in the place we would like to be, and we know that,’ said Bompastor. ‘But at the same time, we are still in a place where if we perform in each of the 11 games that are left, we still have time to be in a good position at the end of the season.
‘We know the situation. We know we will have to perform in every game. Every game is worth three points, but now it becomes even more crucial to secure maximum points in every match to ensure we have a chance to win the title.
‘It’s part of our DNA and mentality to compete to the end. We are not going to give up. If we get good results in the next few games, we'll be back in a really good position.’
During a long season where you are competing on multiple fronts, rotation is necessary. The head coach understands swapping players out of the starting XI inevitably leaves some feeling unhappy with their playing time. Yet her ruthless desire to win means she is at peace with having conversations over playing time concerns and feels that our depth is a crucial weapon in fighting for four different trophies at the back end of the campaign.
‘It's always been the case at Chelsea that every individual has to play a role,’ Bompastor continued. ‘I understand it's more difficult for some players when they are not getting the minutes they want.
‘But if you reflect on last season, everyone had a role to play in different ways. That's how it is when you are at Chelsea, and you compete at the top. We have to keep everybody focused on the main goals, even when some players are not getting the minutes they want.
‘That's part of our environment, it’s for me to manage and to help the players understand they are all important. We need to have depth in the squad to make sure we reach the expectations.’
While last season saw us go unbeaten in all three domestic competitions, the head coach doesn’t see any difference in the challenge this time around.
Bompastor has already won multiple trophies during her time at Lyon – including the Women’s Champions League – and is well versed in knowing what it takes to deliver trophies.
‘The second part of the season is always the same for teams that are competing at the top,’ she said. ‘You are coming into games where the result matters, and you want to go as far as possible in every competition. For that, you need to make sure you win every single game.
‘That's what we aim for at Chelsea. The second part of the season is even more crucial because as soon as you start to lose points or to lose games, you can be out of the competition. Every game will be important, and we will need to make sure we are consistent throughout the second part of this season. Concentration will be key.
‘Having two fewer games than other teams is already a big gain. To have automatically qualified for the quarter-finals also shows the quality we have in the squad. The competition this season in the Women’s Champions League has been high, and to have some big results in the new league phase was really good for our confidence.’
How many trophies the Blues will end the season with is yet unclear. But one thing is for sure, you can guarantee we will fight until the very end. It is in our DNA.
