Sonia Bompastor gave details of why midfielder Keira Walsh was substituted after 20 minutes during our 1-0 win over Austria Vienna on Wednesday night, before giving her thoughts on our overall performance.
Walsh had to be replaced with Lexi Potter after only 20 minutes, but as the head coach explained, the substitution was more of a precaution than for anything serious.
'We were trying to be cautious with her,' said Bompastor. 'She just felt a little bit of something in her quad, so hopefully it's not too bad. We'll assess her tomorrow (Thursday) and see if she's available for Sunday's game.
'It's too soon now for me to tell you something. I will probably know more tomorrow and so you will have to wait for the press conference.'
Maika Hamano also replaced Melvine Malard at half-time during our 1-0 win, but Blues supporters need not worry about her early departure from the pitch.
'It was pre-planned,' continued the head coach. 'Today the plan was for Melvine to get 45 minutes. She didn't have a proper pre-season, so we are trying now to build her up for the next games. I think it was appropriate for her to get 45 minutes today and hopefully, she'll be fine to be available for the game on Sunday.'
Despite playing in the Women's Champions League for the first time, Austria Vienna provided a stern test for Chelsea, and in fact, managed to match us in terms of shots on target as the game ended with six apiece. That was despite our superior possession of the ball, but Bompastor was not shocked by the threat they posed.
'I'm not surprised because I observed their games, especially the two games they played against Brann,' she continued. 'I think their physicality was really showcased in those two games. Tonight I put a really experienced team out to start the game, and the reason was we were expecting a tough test.
'Probably the performance is not the one we wanted to have. We could have controlled the game a little bit better in terms of maybe scoring the second goal, or killing the opposition's hope. But, you know, sometimes you need to also take what is most important, and I think tonight that was to win and to take the three points from the game.
'I think the players on these teams are able to match the intensity of a Champions League game from the beginning of the game until the end, as you could see tonight. The coaches are good in terms of the tactical aspects. When they come into the games, they are really well prepared, and they have a good game plan.
'So, as I said, nothing is easy. Tonight the most important thing was to win. To keep the clean sheet also. I think even if we conceded more situations than in our previous games, we stayed strong. We didn't concede, and that's good. I think we had a really good team performance in those aspects, in terms of mentality not to concede.'
The Blues have no time to rest on the laurels of tonight's win, as we face a big London derby against Arsenal at Stamford Bridge on Sunday afternoon. Yet Bompastor was unconcerned about the turnaround time between the two fixtures and feels fully confident the team will be ready.
'We have enough time to recover for the game at the weekend,' she said. I'm not worried about that. I know we will be coming in with fresh legs and the game will be so different. And it's the London derby, so we'll be ready.'
