There were balloons in the home dressing room on Wednesday night as Chelsea’s match with Roma coincided with Lucy Bronze’s 35th birthday.

If anyone proves that age is just a number, it’s Bronze. Her performances this season have belied her status as a veteran of the game, and she has appeared in 11 of our 12 matches so far.

Her move into a more central defensive role could have seen her conserve energy, stay back and simply extinguish threats from the opposition. Yet she still gets forward at every opportunity, as the stats from the 2-0 win over Roma highlight.

Bronze made the most recoveries (ten) and won the most tackles (three) in Wednesday’s Women’s Champions League victory, completed the most passes of any outfield player (53), while also attempting two crosses and creating two chances for her team-mates.

Chelsea head coach Sonia Bompastor worked with Bronze back at Lyon, and took the time to praise her defender after the win over Roma.

'The performance she put on the pitch, again, was unbelievable,' said Bompastor. ‘She's a machine. That's the only word I have to describe Lucy mentally in terms of her fitness and the quality of the performance. She's a really special player.

'I haven't seen a lot of players like her in my whole career as a player, and as a coach, so it's really nice to have her with us. What she brings to the team is just so special.'

Singling her out was high praise indeed from a coach who has won the Champions League as a player and a manager in France and a domestic Treble in her first season at Chelsea, and has come across many top-level athletes in her storied career.

Lucy Bronze may now be 35, but the “machine” is performing at the highest level and showing no signs of slowing down.
