Sonia Bompastor was delighted to win 9-1 against Liverpool in the Women's League Cup quarter-final on Sunday, and said it was part of Chelsea's DNA to score four more times after the Reds had managed to pull a goal back.
The result was certainly a team effort. Bompastor made seven changes from the side which defeated Wolfsburg to progress to the Women's Champions League quarter-finals last Wednesday, and there were six different players on the scoresheet.
Sam Kerr netted the first two of the game, Johanna Rytting Kaneryd fired home a hat-trick, and Wieke Kaptein, Aggie Beever-Jones, Sjoeke Nusken and Millie Bright bagged a goal apiece in a rampant victory in St Helens. And after a disappointing 1-1 draw at the same venue last month, the Blues head coach was understandably delighted with how the players performed.
'To finish the year in this way was ideal and perfect,' beamed the manager.
'I’m pleased because the most important thing coming into this game was to have some fresh legs, so we rotated the squad, and the girls who played today showed they are really good players, and they had a great game.
'Today we were able to score with different players, and Jojo had a hat-trick. It’s good for her confidence, and that’s the best thing that can happen for attacking players. I’m pleased for her, and for the team, also we had Sam, who scored two, and Millie scored one as well. There were a lot of positives from this game.
'Maybe if I want to be a little bit picky, I wish we could’ve kept a clean sheet today. They scored from a corner, so maybe that gave my team more motivation to keep scoring more goals. It was a complete performance and a great result. It’s part of our DNA to be resilient, to work hard and always give our all on the pitch. That’s what we need to do in terms of mentality as professionals.'
Chelsea started two 19-year-olds in Lexi Potter and Veerle Buurman on Sunday afternoon. Bompastor took her opportunity to hand some minutes to the young duo, with Potter making her first-ever start for the Blues. Their displays showed that the head coach was correct to have faith in them.
'We have some really young, talented players, Lexi being one of them,' Bompastor continued. 'We also had Veerle Buurman, who started the game today. They both performed well.
'I know the quality they bring and the impact they can have on the team. I’m pleased for them because they have the right mentality and they work really hard in training sessions. They deserve to start some games and enjoy being involved with the team.'
