Sonia Bompastor was delighted not only to register our first win in the Women's Champions League this season, but also that her side raced to a 4-0 lead after 63 minutes, which then allowed her to give minutes to other players in the squad.

The Blues had scored only one goal in four of our last five matches, but when a Sandy Baltimore penalty had put us ahead against Paris, the floodgates opened, and Johanna Rytting Kaneryd, Alyssa Thompson, and Erin Cuthbert all found the back of the net to complete the rout.

That meant that the head coach was able to make a triple substitution 10 minutes after the restart and gave extra minutes to Sam Kerr as she continues to build her match fitness after a 20-month injury layoff.

'We have been talking with Sam about her getting some minutes, but that's always a challenge because when you have a player who has been out for so long, you need to allow her to get minutes, but at the same time, it's not easy when the games are tight and the physicality is high. That's even if we know the quality and experience Sam brings.

'Tonight was good because when the team performs, and when we get a good result in the first half, I can rotate the squad. That allows some players to get those minutes, to go to the next level. I think tonight was a perfect night in many aspects.'

Bompastor was disappointed that her side could only draw against FC Twente last week and spoke about the need to be more clinical in terms of finishing chances.

A 1-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur at the weekend saw us make some progress towards that aim, but the boss was delighted with the character shown to win by an even greater margin on Wednesday.

'The most important is the character we have shown in the last two games,' continued the head coach. 'I'm very open with my players. I will always protect them in public, but when I have to analyse the game, and we haven't performed at our best level, I'm quite direct and honest with them.

'When I tell them something didn't work, I'll also make sure I'm the one who is giving them simple things to achieve, and for that reason, they maybe think, 'okay, Sonia is with us, we didn't have the best performance, but we are all together'.

'I'm really pleased with the reaction we showed on the pitch during the last two games. I think in both games we were the better team. We created a lot. We couldn't score more than one goal at the weekend, but at least we created a lot of chances, and if we stay at that level, we'll be in a better place in the future.'
