Sonia Bompastor explained how the Blues put together a 3-0 win over West Ham and described Chelsea Academy graduate Lexi Potter as a 'starter' for the team.
A clinical finish from Melvine Malard seven minutes from half-time saw us take the lead, while goals in the final ten minutes of the match from Keira Walsh and Maika Hamano completed a dominant display against the Hammers.
This was our sixth consecutive clean sheet. Today's game was played at the end of a gruelling 11 days during which time we faced Austria Vienna and Arsenal at home before away matches against Lyon and West Ham.
'When you are Chelsea, you need to find different ways to win the games,' said Bompastor after the 3-0 victory. 'Today was about winning. We knew coming into this game that it was the last one in a really intense and condensed block: many fixtures, big games, and also a lot of travel.
'We weren’t as fresh as we would have liked to have been, but we found a way to win. We didn't concede much against this team, and we know they were probably looking to hurt us in transition.
'We knew coming into this game we had to be a little bit patient because we were going to face a team that would defend with a back five today, a low block, so the spaces were not always open.
'So we stayed strong; we scored a really important goal in the first half, we kept the clean sheet, and we were able to break them in the second half.'
The Blues head coach introduced Lexi Potter at half-time in place of Sjoeke Nusken. The 20-year-old has impressed with some strong displays alongside Keira Walsh in midfield, so much so that Potter will now join up with the senior England side for the first time.
Bompastor linked a more controlled second-half performance with Potter's introduction. She even went so far as to say that the Academy graduate had won a place among Chelsea's starters, before also praising Walsh's impact against West Ham.
'As you could see, when Lexi is playing for our team, she is really good right now,' she explained. 'She brings calmness; she brings quality on the ball. At the level she's performing right now, she's a starter for us. There is no doubt about that.
'We controlled the ball more in the second half, and the quality we had on the ball was better as well. With Lexi being on the pitch, it helps a lot.
'Keira is playing a little bit higher than probably last season. It helps us a lot in terms of creating opportunities. We know how good she is when she is at the edge of the box; even if the opposition knows what she’s going to do, her shot is so great that she’s able to score.
'And right now it's good to have a player who is confident and brings us the solution to scoring goals. That's really important.'
