Sonia Bompastor was delighted with the 4-3 win over Aston Villa, but was disappointed with aspects of our performance at Kingsmeadow on Sunday afternoon.

The Blues took the three points from a seven-goal thriller at Kingsmeadow after the visitors scored within the first two minutes of the match, before goals from Sam Kerr, Naomi Girma and Lauren James put us 3-1 up.

Villa fought back in this topsy-turvy clash as Kirsty Hanson netted a brace before half-time to send the sides in at 3-3, before Sjoeke Nusken finished from a superb team move late in the second half.

Bompastor spoke of her delight at the result of the match, but admitted she had concerns over the three goals conceded.

'I love emotions, but... maybe not in this scenario!' she joked afterwards. 'Six goals in half an hour was good for the women's game, good for the fans, but probably not good for what we want to achieve and the way we want to play.

'But it was a great result. We know from now until the end of the season, every game will be difficult. We will have to fight and to put in a very good performance if we want to win.

'We wanted to start strong, but we conceded a goal early in the game, which was not good and not the start we wanted to have. I really liked the reaction from the team and from my players because we were able to score three goals in a really quick time.

'However, especially at 3-1, you should control the game and, if you reflect on the first half, Aston Villa had three shots on goal and scored the three goals, so not good enough at all from us in terms of the defensive aspects.'

With the win against Aston Villa, Chelsea move into second place in the Women's Super League table with three matches remaining. Bompastor emphasised how important our fourth goal could be in the context of the race to finish in the top three and earn a spot in next season's UEFA Women's Champions League.

'At half-time, I was a bit frustrated,' she continued. 'I spoke with the players. I just told them the solutions coming into the second half and what we had to do, making sure we were able to play and score at least one more goal than the opposition. I think in the second half, we controlled the game most of the time. We had a lot of opportunities and scored the fourth goal, which was very important for us.

'Because you could see, it was a relief for everyone - for players, staff and me - to score that goal, because the reality right now is we are fighting for the Champions League spots, and this win is great and important.'

Chelsea now move on to the second leg of our Champions League quarter-final against Arsenal at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday night and Bompastor pointed to last season's come-back from 2-0 down against Manchester City as proof that we can overturn the 3-1 deficit against the Gunners.

She also called for our fans to turn up in numbers and help cheer the side to victory, just as they did 12 months ago.

'The crowd could make a huge difference for us,' said the head coach. 'We have already faced the scenario where we lost the first leg and we knew we needed to win the game. We had a strong start and the fans were behind the team, which gives you a big lift, a big boost in terms of confidence.

'We are hoping for us to have a strong start on Wednesday and to bring the fans with us to make sure they bring this extra energy we will need in the game. We need to win the game and we need to score goals.

'So if you reflect on that, I think today was good preparation. We had three different scorers, so it makes us a little bit more unpredictable. And I think it gives us the confidence that we are able to do that.

'I think my job is to make sure that when the players go on the pitch on Wednesday, they will be the best prepared in all aspects of the performance.'

A huge Women's Champions League quarter-final second leg awaits as Chelsea take on rivals Arsenal at the Bridge. The stakes have never been higher. Make sure you’re there and back the Blues in this important knockout fixture!
