Sonia Bompastor explained why Lauren James was substituted after 60 minutes of our 1-0 win over Arsenal and reflected on how the Blues were able to pull together to secure the three points.

After a strong start to the game from the visitors, the Blues wrestled back momentum, taking the lead through Alyssa Thompson's strike on 39 minutes. Yet there was plenty of work still to be done as both sides exchanged chances in the second half.

Chelsea dug deep to secure the three points, spurred on by the Blues fans who made themselves heard in what was an electric atmosphere inside Stamford Bridge.

After grinding out a 1-0 victory against Austria Vienna in midweek, we recorded another hard-fought win against our London rivals, and the head coach explained that the tenacity shown by her players so far this season is something that the team has been working hard on behind the scenes.

'The plan for us this season is mindset and mentality,' explained Bompastor.

'I've been talking a lot about being strong and being together. No matter what happens in the game, I always want to see a group of players, and also a team who is together in our high moments when we doing well, but also in the low moments.

'We came into this game well-prepared in terms of knowing we were going to have some moments in the game where we were probably not in control, especially in possession of the ball, because we knew how good Arsenal are at doing that.

'So we prepared the game for those moments. Even if we didn't have the ball, we knew exactly where we wanted to rotate the ball and where we wanted to leave some spaces, and I think we dealt with that really well.

'We were also really strong in terms of the mental aspect, but also physical aspects: winning the duels and defending the box. To not concede against an Arsenal side who are a strong team with great talent in the attacking line, midfield, the fullbacks...everywhere, it's a great result and performance.'

The win against Arsenal was our fourth consecutive clean sheet in all competitions. The Blues have only conceded three times in seven matches this season: two in our first fixture against Real Sociedad, and once against Aston Villa at Stamford Bridge.

The head coach is pleased with our defensive performances, and with another big test to come away at Lyon on Wednesday night, the head coach explained how she would reflect on what can be learned from the latest win.

'I'm pleased with the effort the players put on the pitch today,' she continued. 'From the beginning of the season, we didn't concede a lot of goals, which is great. I'm pleased with that.

'We still have some work to be done in those areas, and then we'll reflect on the game and take the learnings. But I think it was a strong performance today in terms of the out-of-possession work.'

After missing last Wednesday's match against Austria Vienna, Lauren James returned to the starting line-up today, but was withdrawn after an hour. Bompastor gave an update on her condition and explained why she was substituted.

'We knew after LJ got a knock in training, we didn't want to take any risks because this game was coming,' she said. 'Sometimes what is difficult for a head coach is that every game is important because when you think about rotating and managing the squad, you need to make sure you mainly win the games.

'With the information from the medical team from the beginning, I knew we were going to prepare for LJ to start this game, and it was great news. Having 60 minutes was probably a good plan because she hadn't played for one week.

'She didn't stay home for a long time, but I think maybe she still couldn't work the way she would have liked to. So 60 minutes was good, and she brought a contribution to the game.'
