As Chelsea begin the 2025/26 campaign run-in, head coach Sonia Bompastor is grateful to have an in-form Lauren James at her disposal.
The England star recently extended her stay with the club until 2030, and scored a brace in our last Women’s Super League match, a 4-3 win over Aston Villa at Kingsmeadow.
Blues supporters voted her goal against Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium as Goal of the Month for March, while she also won the same award for her strike in our 2-0 win over Liverpool in February.
With three WSL matches remaining this season, Bompastor praised the efforts of our talented number 10.
‘LJ is performing at a really good level,’ said the head coach in her pre-Everton press conference. ‘I think the team is also helping her to perform at that level. Having a player like LJ helps a lot because she can create a lot of different opportunities for the team.
‘She has really good individual strengths, and I think it’s really difficult for an opponent to defend against LJ.
‘It’s crucial for us to have a player like her available going into the last part of the season. She can score at any time in the game – that’s really important.’
The players have just returned to training at Cobham following the international break, with 18 of our players representing 11 different nations during the window.
For Bompastor, the pause in domestic action gave her a chance to prepare for the final games of the season, as well as some well-deserved rest.
Now, her focus is firmly placed on achieving two important objectives: securing a spot in next year's Women’s Champions League and winning the Women’s FA Cup.
‘Having a two-and-a-half-week break meant it was good to do both,’ continued Bompastor. ‘Obviously, my job is to make sure I prepare fully for the last block. I’m really professional, and I like to be prepared for any detail.
‘So, myself and the staff are really prepared for the last block, and we want to make sure we play five games until the end of the season. We have three games left in the league, and we want to qualify for the FA Cup final.
‘We are prepared for that plan, but it was also good to have a little bit of time off with the family.'
