Sonia Bompastor wants Chelsea to be more ruthless in front of goal ahead of an important end to the campaign in which we will be competing for the Women's FA Cup trophy and a place in the Women's Champions League for next season.
Speaking after the 3-2 aggregate defeat to Arsenal on Wednesday evening, the head coach pointed out that while the Blues have created plenty of chances of late, we have been lacking the finishing needed to put away those opportunities.
Chelsea had an xG (expected goals) rating of 2.52 in our clash against the Gunners at Stamford Bridge, firing 16 shots on goal, creating five big chances and hitting the woodwork twice, yet we scored only once.
An early strike would've put the pressure on the visitors, but we could only put the ball in the back of the net in stoppage time, leaving no room to score the crucial second goal.
‘We have been missing that clinical element in front of the goal, and that's probably why our season is not at the level we want it to be,' explained Bompastor afterwards. 'That's the reality. The only thing is I think the players are trying hard – I'm behind them.
‘I think the most important thing is for the players in this squad to be confident, because confidence helps a lot.'
Scoring goals against tough opposition is easier said than done, which is exactly why some matches end in a goalless draw, even after 90-plus minutes of play.
Bompastor wants her players to develop the killer instinct in front of goal, but has spoken throughout the campaign about the need to strike a balance between working on finishing without affecting players' belief in themselves.
She said: 'It's always the most difficult thing [to finish chances]. We’re always able to create opportunities, but we have to make sure we stay composed, and we are ruthless when we are in those situations.
'That’s something we can try to work on again in training, but it is also something mentally, we need to make sure the players stay confident.’
