After Sonia Bompastor had shown her disappointment with a 1-1 draw away at FC Twente in our opening Women’s Champions League match of the season, the Chelsea head coach explained how the side reflected on the performance once they had returned to training at Cobham this week.
The Blues head coach is still unbeaten in all of her 30 games in the Women’s Super League heading into Sunday’s clash with Tottenham at Kingsmeadow and stressed the importance of keeping things in perspective.
‘I said to some members of staff, you really need to enjoy it when you keep winning because it’s rare in football,’ said Bompastor. ‘We reflected on the midweek game with Twente with the team this morning. It happens in football.
‘We always want to win going into every game, but the competition is getting harder and harder. We knew going into the Twente game, it would be a good challenge for us. We know what we need to do better after analysing the performance, and hopefully on Sunday we'll be able to do that.
‘I'm grateful because I have a lot of leaders in the squad. I think we had some natural conversations, some individual, some with small groups, and some with the whole team. We are quite honest and direct when we discuss what is working and what we need to improve.
‘I told everyone this morning, the most important thing is now to focus on the future because when we focus on the past, we can't control it anymore. We are making sure we take the learnings and we move forward all together.’
Chelsea have only scored once in three out of their last four matches. Aside from 4-0 win against West Ham, the Blues have registered a 1-0 win against Leicester City, and two 1-1 draws against Manchester United and FC Twente.
The head coach has identified a lack of clinical finishing as the main issue facing her side at the moment and explained how she plans to rectify the issue.
‘In our game model, mentality is the foundation,’ she said. ‘I think we need to go back to that. Right now, we are not being as clinical as we were last season for different reasons. When that’s the case, you need to make sure your mentality is the right one going into every game because you need to show desire and intent when you are going into the box.
‘That’s the desire to score and to be first on the ball. Also, you need to make sure you make the right decision at the right moment. You still need to be clinical and efficient even when you are under pressure. That comes with confidence.
'When players are fully confident, they are clinical without really knowing why. Sometimes when the goals are not coming, they start to overthink a little bit more and lose that killer instinct in the box. That's probably some of the reasons why we have been less clinical than last year, but we are working on it.’
After the draw away at Manchester United, Bompastor made seven changes to her starting XI when we faced Twente in midweek.
Asked about whether she stood by her decision to rotate in light of the draw, the boss explained why using all of the squad at her disposal is so important, and was philosophical about the high expectations placed upon her.
‘For us, it’s crucial when we have three games in a week to rotate the squad,’ she said. ‘Especially because our competition is high, and we need to give all the players the opportunity to perform in the games.
‘I think it's the right thing to do. On Wednesday, it didn't go our way in terms of the result, but we still have to give chances to the players who are working hard in training sessions during the week.
‘I also know that, as the Chelsea manager, you have to win every game. That's what everyone expects from you, and I'm totally fine with that. I have the same expectation of myself and of my team. It’s normal for people not to be happy about the result, even if we only draw a game. We also have the desire to go into every game wanting to win.’
