Sonia Bompastor has highlighted Sam Kerr’s form and success on the international stage after the striker fired Australia into the Asian Cup final.
It was a dramatic semi-final as the Matildas secured their place in Friday’s showpiece event with Japan after beating China 2-1 in Perth, with Kerr bagging the winner in her hometown alongside fellow Blue Ellie Carpenter, who also player her part in one of the goals.
Having scored in her third consecutive match and made it four goals in five games, Sonia emphasised Kerr’s impact on Australia and praised her resilience, with the 32-year-old continuing to show her quality after missing 18 months due to the ACL injury she suffered in January 2024.
‘It’s great [to see her playing so well], and it’s great for her to be back with Australia – I know how much she loves playing for her country,’ Sonia opened, speaking during her pre-match press conference ahead of tonight’s contest with Brighton.
‘She’s getting a lot of minutes, so it’s good for her confidence and her momentum, and she’s scoring really important goals as well. She scored a great goal this morning [against China].’
Sonia can’t wait for Sam to return – hopefully with another winners’ medal around her neck – and the striker will remain a key part of a Blues side still battling in the WSL, Women’s Champions League and Women's FA Cup.
She continued: ‘When Sam is back with us, [I know] she will be contributing to help the team perform and hopefully help us have great results. I’m pleased for her, and it’s great news for us.’
