Sonia Bompastor highlighted the importance of German midfielder Sjoeke Nusken to the Chelsea squad ahead of our Champions League clash against Wolfsburg this evening.
Victory over the Frauen-Bundesliga side would ensure the Blues automatically qualify for the quarter-finals of the competition, but we will have to be at our best to overcome our hosts.
Throughout this season, Bompastor has utilised the full depth of her Chelsea squad to maintain the highest standards. With that comes natural rotation, which is why Nuksen has made five starts and seven substitute appearances this term.
And while Bompastor acknowledges that a player of Nuksen's talent would understandably want more of a regular starting berth, she insists minutes being shared is part and parcel of playing for a club such as Chelsea.
'Sio is a great player,' said Bompastor. 'She is a starter for her national team and she is also an important player for us. The only thing is, when you play for Chelsea, the competition is high and sometimes it's difficult for the players to get minutes.
'I understand that and know it can sometimes be frustrating for her because she wants to play – it's completely normal for her to have that mindset. Right now, I'm really happy with the squad and the depth we have and the results we have been getting.
'It's also about staying patient when you are not in the starting XI and trying to understand your role when you are not starting the game, because you can impact the match coming on as a substitute.
'If you are not involved in one game, you could be starting the next one. So let's see what happens tomorrow. Again, Sio is a great player. She's great for the national team and she's great for us, even if she's not getting minutes.
'I know she would like to, but she's also a great person and it's very nice to have her in the squad around all the players. For me, she has a German mentality – I'm sure you know what I'm talking about – and it's very nice to have a player like her.'
Wolfsburg are seven-time champions of the Frauen-Bundesliga and have won the Champions League twice, as well as finishing runners-up on four occasions. And the Blues have found them a difficult opponent in years past, having won just two and lost six of the previous 10 meetings.
For that reason, Bompastor will not underestimate their prowess going into this clash, but remains confident in our own abilities.
'I think Wolfsburg have been one of the most experienced teams in the women's game. They’ve had a lot of success. We have so much respect for this team.
'That's always our mentality. We respect every opponent, and we know coming here won't be an easy game. We are facing a really motivated team that are playing at home, and if they win the game they could finish in the top four.
'That's enough motivation for them to prepare for the game in the best way possible, but we also have a really good squad in terms of quality and in terms of depth.'
