Sonia Bompastor has been impressed with how her side have trained this week after a disappointing result at home to Arsenal last weekend.
After going unbeaten in all domestic competitions last season, the Blues succumbed to a 2-0 defeat to the Gunners on Saturday, leaving us nine points behind Manchester City in the Women’s Super League table.
It was an unfamiliar feeling for this Chelsea team, but the head coach has made sure her team have done everything possible as we prepare to face Man City on Sunday with a chance to cut their lead at the top.
‘We are not used to losing, but we had a good reflection on the game between all of us,’ said Bompastor. ‘That's the starting point for us to take the learnings from that game.
‘Training has being great. The quality, intensity and the focus are there. There’s been a major reaction and I’ve been able to see that on the training pitch with players who are really focussing on what we need to take from that game, and making sure we bring that into our performance on Sunday.
‘For me, the most important thing is for us to be able to shift and to look at what is ahead now. We are all clear. That’s myself as a manager, the players, but also the board and we know where we are at now. The reflection has been really honest between us and we have trained hard.
‘We are working hard because when you are at Chelsea, you need to win the games. Those are the expectations and I know that.
‘Probably we can have some explanations on why we are in this position, but we need to make sure we just focus on what we can control, to make sure we improve and we have better performances and results in the future.’
While the Blues have a big task ahead of us if we are going to retain the WSL title for the seventh consecutive year, Bompastor is not ready to give up.
Our head coach has presided over six wins from seven games against Man City since she first came to the club at the start of last season, and Sunday’s game could provide us with the starting point for a fightback.
‘Our mentality is to fight until the end, no matter what happens,’ Bompastor continued. ‘We will never give up, and there are seven games left in the WSL. The only thing is that right now it is not in our hands and I think the most important thing is that we need to focus on what we can control.
‘Man City are leading on top of the table and they are in control. We need to put the focus on how we want to perform, going into each game, to make sure we have a better chance to win.’
