Sonia Bompastor says a small calf injury kept Johanna Rytting Kaneryd out of our Champions League quarter-final second leg against Arsenal.

The Sweden international was absent at the weekend as the Blues overcame Aston Villa at Kingsmeadow, and despite Bompastor being hopeful she would return against the Gunners, Rytting Kaneryd was not included in the match-day squad for our European clash.

It proved to be a night of mixed emotions at Stamford Bridge. While the Blues produced a strong performance and recorded a deserved 1-0 victory in the second leg of our last-eight tie, it wasn't quite enough to progress as we exited the Champions League following a 3-2 aggregate defeat.

With Aggie Beever-Jones and Mayra Ramirez sidelined, the absence of Rytting Kaneryd further restricted Bompastor's attacking options – and the 29-year-old will also be absent for our FA Cup quarter-final against Tottenham at Kingsmeadow on Easter Monday.

Rytting Kaneryd has been called up for Sweden's forthcoming World Cup qualifiers, and while Bompastor did not rule out the possibility of Rytting Kaneryd featuring for her country during the international break, she said the winger's fitness is being monitored day by day.

'She just picked up a small injury in her calf during a training session, so she won't be available even for the next game,' explained Bompastor. So we could see her after the international break.

'We are assessing her day by day and are communicating with the Swedish staff. We'll make the best decision for her, but there is still a chance for her to be able to play with Sweden.'
