Sonia Bompastor was left feeling frustrated after Chelsea could only draw 1-1 with FC Twente at the De Grolsch Veste Stadium on Wednesday evening.

The home side took the lead after 63 minutes through captain Danique van Ginkel, before a penalty converted by Sandy Baltimore seven minutes later levelled the scores.

Under the new Women’s Champions League format, we took a point into the league table with five matches to play, and the Blues head coach explained why the match didn’t go according to plan.

‘That was not the result we were expecting,’ Bompastor said afterwards. ‘It was a bad result for us. We wanted to start the campaign strongly. We couldn’t tonight, and I think if we analyse the game, we created a lot of opportunities but could only score one goal.

‘That’s what happens when you don’t kill the opposition’s hope, you keep them in the game. They were strong enough to score one, and afterwards it was more difficult for us.

‘When you go into these games, you have to make sure you are the first team to score, because after it becomes more difficult. We need to be more clinical and probably also in terms of mentality, we need to be more aggressive when we have the ball, and especially in the box.’

There were some positives in the way Chelsea played against a resolute Twente side. Once the initial disappointment subsides, the coach feels that there are some moments from the match that her side can learn from.

‘For most of the game we were in control,’ she continued. ‘Especially out of possession, being aggressive. We didn’t concede a lot, but on one or two occasions, they came into our box and took a shot from distance. They were able to score, so it changed the game.

‘We need to take the learnings from the game and stay together. It’s tough tonight, but we have a quick turnaround and a game in the league on Sunday, and we need to make sure we are mentally prepared for that.’

Chelsea played Twente home and away last season in the Women’s Champions League, winning 3-1 in the Netherlands and 6-1 in the return leg at Stamford Bridge.

The head coach gave some final thoughts on the difference a year has made for these two teams.

‘Reflecting on the match tonight compared to the games against Twente last season, I think the difference is that we couldn’t be clinical enough in the box,’ she concluded. ‘In the first half, just in terms of statistics, we had 18 crosses in the box, and we only connected with those six times.’
