After extending our unbeaten run to 21 matches this season with a 1-0 win over Tottenham, Sonia Bompastor has explained exactly why it's important to finish the season without defeat, despite having already clinched the WSL trophy.
Chelsea fielded a heavy rotated side at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, but still managed to grind out a 1-0 win and the boss detailed why it is still so important for this Chelsea team to finish strongly.
'It's part of our DNA and mentality,' said Bompastor. 'Being invincible during the season won't bring us any trophies, but I think it's more about showing our mentality, the right mentality we have as competitors.
'I'm lucky enough to have players in my squad who are competitors as much as myself and the staff, and I think that's really important to make sure if we can break records, we just go for that again.
'Before the game, I told my players that staying unbeaten is a good thing, but I also want to make sure we come here with the right mentality to win the game and get the three points, because I also know we can break records with a certain number of points at the top of the table.
'So that's also why you what want to play every time you step on the pitch.
'It's important because it's part of history. I think when you are a player or a manager and you are still doing the job, maybe it's not the best time for you to reflect. But I know later it will be important. It's always nice to be part of women's football history. So when you have the opportunity to do that, you go for it.'
Bompastor fielded a much-changed starting XI, leaving Lucy Bronze and Millie Bright out of the squad entirely.
The thinking behind that decision was twofold, the boss explained.
'I think today was the opportunity for me to rotate massively and get some answers from some of my players, for sure.
'It gave them the opportunity to also show themselves for the FA Cup final, because that's always good for everyone to have the opportunity to perform and to show the manager they are ready to compete for that.'
