Sonia Bompastor is never afraid to state her ambitions as Chelsea head coach. Nor should she be after guiding the Blues to a domestic Treble during her first season in charge.
Bompastor is a winner, a fact proven during her playing career and further cemented after she transitioned to coaching. She demands the best from her players and staff in pursuit of success, which has been regularly achieved.
Her first season at Chelsea saw three pieces of silverware – the Women's Super League title, the FA Cup, and the League Cup – claimed. Bompastor's second gets underway in earnest on September 5 against Manchester City at Stamford Bridge.
It's a high-profile encounter, and an immediate test for the Blues against a fellow WSL title hopeful. Yet Bompastor is relishing the game and wants her side to begin this season as they started last: with a victory.
‘It's exciting,’ says the Blues head coach. ‘Especially when you have the opportunity to play at home in the first game in front of your fans. As competitors, we always want to play in these big games.
‘When I was a player and a manager in France, I didn't really have the chance to experience games in front of thousands of fans. Maybe a little bit with the French national team, but when I came to England, I think that was probably the biggest difference.
‘Here we play most of the matches in front of a big crowd. Whether you play at Stamford Bridge or Kingsmeadow, the atmosphere is really special. I have to say, I have really enjoyed that. I have always felt – whether you are a player or manager – you are stepping on the pitch and you are competing in every game to feel emotion.
‘When you win games, you want to share those emotions with your fans, and I think our fans were incredible last season. We could feel their support from the beginning of the game until the end. Whether we were playing home or away, they always showed up in big numbers, and that's really exciting for us.’
Such was the impact Bompastor made at Chelsea last season, she didn't experience a defeat as Blues head coach until March. That came in the first leg of a Champions League quarter-final against Man City, with the home side claiming a 2-0 victory.
Yet back at Stamford Bridge, an astounding display was produced, as Chelsea struck three goals before half-time to turn the tie around. The match, and the emotions that accompanied it, remain firmly in the mind of Bompastor as we prepare to welcome City back to SW6.
‘I remember that game and from the beginning, we could feel the electric atmosphere in the stadium,’ Bompastor recounts. ‘That’s crucial when you want to win things. I could feel goosebumps on my skin.
‘I could feel their support, and that's so nice. I want to let them know their support is really important for the players and for me as the manager. It brings us extra motivation.
‘We want to make sure every time we step on the pitch, we play for us, but also we play for them. We want to bring them the most joy possible. Hopefully, we'll enjoy some success with them at the end of the season and throughout the season too.’
For that exact reason, Bompastor and her players have been working hard in preparation for the season opener at Stamford Bridge. Nothing is being taken for granted.
‘Pre-season is really important for us to make sure we arrive at the first game with our maximum potential,’ she continues.
‘The goal for us is to have another successful season. We know it will be difficult from the beginning, and we are not expecting things to be easy. Winning the Treble last season gave us confidence, but it's a new season now.
‘We start from zero and we have to do it all again. We have to reset, focus on the new season and make sure we perform in every game to be able to win titles again.’
Bompastor has said publicly that she wants to win the quadruple this season. And while some have questioned whether being so overtly ambitious is a wise move, the boss is not holding anything back.
‘We don't want to shy away from our ambitions,’ says Bompastor. ‘Sometimes people say to me, ‘Sonia, why do you say you want to win all four trophies at the beginning of the season?’ For me, it’s ok for us to state our ambitions, because I'm not going to lie, we are at a club where the owners are investing money in the women's team in the best way.
‘I have a squad with a lot of quality and talent, and we have everything we need to perform and to succeed. We are competitors, and every time I come into the new season, I want to make sure we have the elements together for us to win every trophy possible, even though we know it will be difficult.
‘Everyone wants to beat Chelsea. Even if you reflect on last season, people might think it was an easy season because we won the Treble. No, that's not easy. We worked so hard to achieve that, and I think we had the right mentality through the season. We want to make sure we do the same again.
‘So, of course, we are in the mindset of wanting to compete for the four trophies. We have all the quality to do that, even though it will be difficult.’
