Sonia Bompastor has explained why Chelsea's performance was not up to standard against Liverpool on Sunday, but wants to ensure her side's focus now shifts to a tough game at home to Barcelona on Thursday.
Chelsea got off to a good start in St Helens when Alyssa Thompson opened the scoring, but Beata Olsson levelled on 33 minutes, earning the home side a draw.
Bompastor was disappointed to drop points and gave her thoughts on why the Blues couldn't find a way to get back in front against a resolute Liverpool defence.
'Today, the performance was not good enough for us,' said the head coach. 'It wasn’t the performance we wanted to put out on the pitch. We didn't concede a lot. They only had one big chance, and they were able to score with that chance. I think in that moment, we didn't defend well enough.
'We were not able to create as much as we wanted with the ball. When we did create chances, we were not clinical enough to score the second goal. But sometimes it happens in football. You want to have a good performance, but it's not the case. At least when you score early on in the game, it’s a good thing. We needed to be stronger defensively.'
The boss made four changes to the side which beat St. Polten 4-0 in the Women's Champions League in midweek, bringing in Nathalie Bjorn, Millie Bright, Niamh Charles and Erin Cuthbert.
At half-time, Bompastor replaced Bright with Girma and swapped Catarina Macario for Aggie Beever-Jones, while substitute appearances for Sandy Baltimore, Lucy Bronze and Lauren James soon followed. Those switches were made for different reasons, as the coach explained after the match.
'I think it was difficult today because the connection between the players was not good enough,' she continued. 'We didn't always find the spaces we wanted. We spoke before the game, we had a game plan, and we didn't always execute it the way we wanted to.
'To be fair, I think we knew coming into the Liverpool game that they are a tough team to break down, and they are resilient. They had a really good defensive performance, and yet they made things difficult for us today.
'The half-time changes were tactical, but I'm also trying to find the balance between giving some fresh legs into the game and giving some players minutes to return to their best level.
'In the second half, we finished the game with two forwards, Aggie and LJ. We were trying to get the ball higher up the pitch and to have some really good opportunities in the box with crosses and shots from distance.'
Chelsea fired nine shots towards goal during the 90 minutes, but only one of those was registered as on target. Bompastor felt that her side's decision-making could've been better, but wouldn't use a long trip to Austria in midweek as a reason for today's performance.
'I think we made too many offside runs today, and that’s part of having connections between the players,' she said. 'Maybe the timings were not perfect, but also sometimes we had the opportunity to cross the ball in the box and we were waiting for the best position for us to shoot from distance or something else.'
'It's more in these decisions where we need to improve. When you play a game like this, you have to make sure you make the right decision at the right moment.
'Playing every few days is what you expect at Chelsea. We know we are in a busy period, but we have the squad and enough staff to compete in every game.
'Today, as you could see, we had players who came in. I rotated the starting XI at the beginning of the game, and I think we had the quality to compete in this game and to win it. But as I said, sometimes it happens, so now we need to bounce back and focus on the next one.'
