Sonia Bompastor thinks the best is yet to come from Chelsea summer signing Alyssa Thompson, after the American scored and provided an assist during our 4-0 win against Paris FC on Wednesday night.
Thompson played her first match at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday night following her move from Angel City on deadline day, and impressed with her electric pace going forward.
The Chelsea head coach was keen to sing Thompson’s praises afterwards, and explained how having her first Blues goal will help her as the season progresses.
‘As you could see tonight, she brings a lot of speed up front,’ said Bompastor. ‘It's also been the case in her previous games. She’s really comfortable on the ball, and she takes risks. She attacks the defender, one-on-one, and she's able to come inside or outside, so it’s really difficult to defend against her.
‘She’s able to provide a lot of crosses when she goes outside, but also, she's able to finish when the ball is on the opposite side. She's able to finish in the box and score, as she did tonight, so I'm glad for her because she's been working hard. It’s important for a winger or a forward to score goals, and the fact that she was able to score her first for Chelsea was good for her confidence.’
Thompson delighted supporters at Stamford Bridge with her speed and ability to beat defenders as she attacked the opposition box on multiple occasions before being withdrawn just before the hour mark.
Bompastor acknowledged the 20-year-old’s natural talent, while also assuring those fans that there is still a lot more to come from her as she develops at Chelsea.
‘She's really quick,’ the boss continued. ‘She has the engine, and she also has the desire to help the team in and out of possession. When we are attacking, we are high up on the pitch, and if she has to run to recover some space, to help the team defend, she's able to do that. She’s still a young player, but she has a lot of talent.
‘We haven’t seen the best of her yet, but hopefully we'll see that soon. She’s come from abroad, she speaks the language, which helps, but it's a new environment, a new club, and she’s still learning to connect with her team-mates on the pitch.’
