It is not even two years since Sonia Bompastor took over at Chelsea and she has already won four pieces of silverware as the Blues head coach. Now she wants our latest triumph, in the Women’s League Cup final, to propel us to more glory this season.
The Blues defeated Manchester United 2-0 at Ashton Gate courtesy of goals in each half from Lauren James and Aggie Beever-Jones. It was a closely-fought contest but Bompastor’s side stepped up in the crucial moments to bring the trophy back to London for the second season running, and the fourth time in our history.
For Bompastor, it was just reward for her squad’s efforts.
‘Trophies never get old!’ she said.
‘It means a lot. I told the players before the game that when you have the opportunity to win a trophy, you have to take it. When you are a winner, that’s what you do.
‘I’m really pleased for my players. We worked hard. My players deserved it. They probably all deserve a lot of good things because as a team we did a good game.’
The Blues return to action on Wednesday evening when we welcome Brighton to Kingsmeadow for a WSL fixture. Later this month our Champions League quarter-final tie with Arsenal gets underway, while our FA Cup showdown with Tottenham is also not far away.
After winning the first piece of silverware on offer this season, Bompastor wants her players to use this success as fuel to get our hands on more trophies before the campaign concludes.
‘We have a really big month with a lot of games, so this is the best way to start the month,’ said Bompastor.
‘I’m hoping for us to perform at our best level this month because we have big games coming in big competitions. We want to go as far as possible in every competition. That’s what we want to achieve.
‘Hopefully we can grab more trophies. That’s why we are coming every day onto the pitch. We went back to a good level of confidence and we can recognise the team a little better in that aspect.’
