Sonia Bompastor reflected on a difficult day for Chelsea Women as we exited the UEFA Women's Champions League at the semi-final stage after a second-leg defeat to Barcelona.
Chelsea were eliminated from the Champions League after a 4-1 defeat at Stamford Bridge mirrored the scoreline from last Sunday in Barcelona. Our head coach took some positives from the opening stages of today's game, but reflected on what was ultimately a difficult day for us.
'Yeah, everyone is really sad, first of all, frustrated by the result, but also the performance,' said Bompastor. 'We all wanted to have a good performance, especially playing a home game with the support of the fans.
'Today we couldn't perform again. We knew we were going to have a tough challenge. We knew we are going to play the best team in Europe, probably.
'The first 30 minutes of the game were good. The only thing and the biggest difference between Barcelona and us is that we created some opportunities but we were were not clinical. Probably if we had scored the first goal, the game could have been different.
'I think the fans were just waiting for us to score that first goal to help us to turn things around. It did not happen. As you could see, when they scored their first goal, it was too easy for them, I think, especially when you leave space for her to go and to score. I think after the first goal, mentally, we just didn't play well enough to cope with the situation.'
After a tough Champions League exit, the boss was unequivocal around the club's ambitions to lift the elite European trophy in the future. But the focus is very much on winning the two trophies that are still available to us this season.
'It's maybe not the right timing for us to talk about that because we still have two competitions to go and really important games to come ,' Bompastor continued. 'The one on Wednesday will be crucial again for the league. But as a club and as manager, I want to make sure we reflect.
'These two games are two big lessons for us. If we want to move forward, we need to reflect on what we need to do to be a better team, to be ready to perform against the best team in Europe, which is Barcelona.
'But every club has that reflection. I remember when Barcelona lost the final in 2022 against Lyon, they had this big reflection on how they could move forward to be a better team. We'll have that time with the club, the ownership, the sporting directors and myself, to just make sure we improve in the right direction to be able to compete against Barcelona and other teams.'
