Blues head coach Sonia Bompastor gave an honest assessment of her team's recent fortunes during her pre-Barcelona press conference, but assured the work carried out in recent training sessions will ensure her side is prepared to face a tough match on Thursday night.
The Blues have registered 1-1 draws in consecutive Women's Super League matches against Arsenal and Liverpool, while we also drew 1-1 in our opening Women's Champions League fixture against FC Twente.
Chelsea now sit three points behind Manchester City in the WSL table, and are two points behind leaders Barcelona in the league phase of the UWCL.
After reviewing the data from the early part of the season, Bompastor has identified areas in which the team needs to improve.
'We’re not where we want to be,' said the head coach. 'From the start of this season, we wanted to always be at the top. The results recently are not the ones we wanted.
'We had really good reviews as a team after the games when we were not performing or delivering. I think we know what we have to do to perform better. So now it's more for us to turn words into actions, going into the next games.
'At the highest level, it’s always really important to be efficient and clinical. Right now, we are creating some opportunities and big chances. We probably need to be more clinical. If you compare our statistics from last season to this season, I think we are underperforming.
'That's the reality, but we have a good mentality and we are working hard every day in training sessions to change things and improve them.'
While the Blues have created plenty of opportunities to score this season, Bompastor has consistently spoken about the need for clinical finishing.
Barcelona are an opponent the coach feels will not allow as many chances as other teams we have faced, and therefore, the need to put chances away becomes even greater.
'We are not happy when we don't win games,' explained Bompastor. 'We are not happy when we don't perform the way we want to, and we are making sure we focus our energy on that.
'Against Barcelona, we might not get as many opportunities as we have created in some of our previous matches. When you play them, you need to be clinical. That's always what happens when you play against good teams. We are expecting that.'
