In the latest instalment of our series where we take a look at the upbringing of our scholars, today we focus on left-back Alex Kpakpe who was inspired to play football by his cousins and recalls his days playing handball...

What is your first memory of playing football?

I would’ve been five years old, playing around in the garden with my two older cousins, Ryan and Steven Sessegnon [Ryan is at Tottenham, Steven at Fulham]. From that age I could see their talent which really inspired me to become a footballer.

Where did you play your football before joining Chelsea as an Under-14?

I used to play in my local concrete cage in Tulse Hill and then I joined a community project to play more competitively and trained there. After my first game I realised I could actually play and was determined to become a footballer.

I joined Chelsea as an Under-14. When I came on trial I was pretty nervous because it’s a big club, but as soon as I started playing my fears went away and eventually I signed.

Did you have any idols as a youngster?

My older cousins were the reason why I started to play football. They were so dedicated to the game and it was really inspirational for me to see.

Were you into any other sports during your school days?

I went to a couple of handball tournaments. It was different because I’m so used to using my feet, it was a big change I had to adapt to but I really enjoyed playing during school. I used to take part in the 100m sprint when I was younger too, and it’s a skill I still use nowadays in football.

Have you ever played in any other positions?

I’m really versatile, during my Sunday league days I played in every position. When I first joined Chelsea I came as a deep midfielder and slowly moved back to left-back where I enjoy playing most now.

What is the best highlight from your career so far?

Getting a professional contract. It was a very big achievement for me and my family. Not many players get this opportunity and for me to be offered one was really important for me to know that Chelsea have belief in me as a player.

The Chelsea Academy is next in action on Friday evening, with a PL2 game against Blackburn. It can be watched live on the website and 5th Stand app. Kick-off is 7pm.
