As we continue our Academy series, looking at our players through a magnifying glass to get a greater insight into the boys on and off the pitch, defender Joseph Wheeler-Henry reveals his strengths, someone he looks up to and what he enjoys doing away from football.
As we reach our first international break of the season, we caught up with a member of our Under-18s squad to get some insight into him and the team.
One of our 2024/25 Academy scholars, Wheeler-Henry is excited about continuing his first full-time Under-18s season, as well as the chance for the 16-year-old to impress and develop his performance.
Last season, the defender played a key role in Chelsea's victory in the Under-17 Premier League Cup. Now he hopes to follow in the footsteps of previous Under-18s sides by winning silverware at this level, with a particular focus on one competition...
What is your biggest strength?
My speed, without a doubt. I like to say I’m one of the quickest players on the team. Being fast is one of my biggest strengths and makes me stand out. Being able to follow the opposition and beat them to the ball could be the difference between winning and losing the game.
What are you most looking forward to this season?
I can’t wait to be involved in the FA Youth Cup. I love the thrill of knockout competitions, because the intensity brings out the best in my performance. It's important to learn how to turn your nerves into talent.
Everyone knows the FA Youth Cup, it's a huge competition that every club wants to win, and I feel this season it's our time!
Also, during the FA Youth Cup you are able to play in men’s stadiums and that seems like an incredible experience. Getting a taste of the senior game will only motivate me more to make that a reality.
What’s your favourite position on the pitch?
I consider myself a versatile defender. I'm confident playing as a centre-back, but my favourite position is right-back. I feel effective on that side, where I can utilise my strength and speed.
However, I'm flexible and will play wherever Hass [Sulaiman, Under-18s head coach] wants me. Whatever position I'm in, I'll give my all and adapt my characteristics to the position.
Who is your role model?
Jude Bellingham. He is a player who has worked his way up the ranks and that inspires me. I admire his journey, starting from Birmingham City to becoming a crucial player for both Real Madrid and England.
He’s not much older than I am, which drives me to keep working hard and giving my all each day in the hope of having a successful career like his.
Who would you say you look up to?
I've always looked up to Antonio Rudiger because of his performances. He is great at tackling and protecting the ball; that's how every defender wants to play. Someone in my position, you have to be aggressive, and as a footballer you have to be focused, which is why he's so successful.
Off the pitch in interviews he seems down to earth and that's important to me. It's important to be grounded.
What do you do in your free time away from football?
I like hanging out and going out with my friends, it’s how I relax away from football.
I enjoy going out for food and talking about things that aren’t related to what’s happening on the pitch. Since we’re all so busy with our commitments, I don’t get to see them often, so I always make the most of the time we have together and never take it for granted.
