As the Academy season resumes at Cobham following the international break, we caught up with one of our first-year scholars, Lewi Richards, to get to know him a little better on and off the pitch.
Chelsea Under-18s return to league action this weekend with a London derby away at Arsenal. The squad has started the season strongly, opening with back-to-back victories by beating Crystal Palace 4-2 before a commanding 6-1 triumph against Aston Villa.
Richards has been part of Chelsea since the age of eight, steadily progressing through the Cobham ranks. He has mostly played in midfield but recently transitioned into a defensive role, highlighting both his adaptability and his tactical understanding of the game.
He has already made a strong impression in his first full season with the Under-18s. With a big test against our London rivals coming up, we got to know a little more about the young Blue as he continues to make his mark in his first year as a scholar.
What are your biggest strengths?
'I would say my biggest strength is my technical consistency, whether that’s passing, shooting or being able to use both feet with confidence. Recently I’ve felt very comfortable in those areas. I’ve spent a lot of time in training working on my weaker foot to try and be as versatile as possible.
'For me, being technically reliable is important because it means the team can trust me in different situations, whether it’s building from the back, creating chances or finishing them off.'
What are you most looking forward to developing more this season?
'Last season was tough because I was out for a long period with a back injury, which meant I couldn’t get the minutes I wanted. This season I’m really looking forward to getting back on the pitch consistently, playing games and building rhythm again.
'I want to keep improving every match, both defensively and going forward. I’m excited to contribute to the team’s success, but more than anything I just want to enjoy playing football again and win as many games as possible with the boys.'
What’s your favourite position on the pitch?
'I’ve been asked to play in a few different roles recently, which has helped me grow as a player, but if I had to choose I’d say right-back is my favourite position. I really enjoy getting up the pitch, putting crosses in and creating chances for the forwards.
'At the same time, I like the defensive side of the game, so it feels like the best of both worlds. In pre-season I managed to score four goals from right-back, so I know I can contribute going forward as well. It’s a position where I feel I can really express myself and impact the game.'
Who would you say you look up to?
'One player I’ve always looked up to is John Terry. I admired his leadership, the way he commanded a team, and his consistency at the very top level. He set standards both on and off the pitch and that’s something I’ve always respected.
'As a defender myself, I try to learn from players like him who gave everything for the shirt and were reliable in the biggest moments.'
Who are your role models?
'Growing up, Steven Gerrard was a big role model for me. I used to watch him all the time because of how much influence he had in games. He scored so many important goals, especially from outside the box and his drive and determination always stood out.
'He was someone who never hid in big moments, and I try to bring that same mindset into my own game. I always want to step up when the team needs it and give 100 per cent.'
What do you do in your free time away from football?
'Away from football, I like to keep things simple and spend as much time as I can with family and friends. That’s really important to me because it helps me stay grounded and enjoy life outside of the game.
'When I was younger, I played a lot of golf, and although I don’t play as much anymore, I still enjoy it now and again.
'On days off I might catch up on some sleep, relax and just enjoy being around the people closest to me. Since I live in digs for football, whenever I get the chance to go home, I make the most of it by spending time with my family.'
