Ahead of our upcoming UEFA Youth League clash away to Qarabag on Wednesday morning, we caught up with Academy midfielder Reggie Walsh to learn more about his journey as Chelsea Under-19s look to continue their winning run in the prestigious European competition.

It’s been a superb start to our UEFA Youth League campaign, with the Under-19s maintaining a perfect record in the opening three fixtures. The journey began with a hard-fought 3-2 victory over Bayern Munich, followed by a commanding 5-2 win against Benfica. Most recently, the team produced another thrilling display at Cobham, overcoming Ajax 6-3 to make it three wins from three.

For midfielder Walsh, the past few months have been particularly memorable. Since signing his scholarship in July, the 17-year-old has continued to make outstanding progress. He made his senior UEFA Champions League debut in our 5-1 victory over Ajax and soon after signed his first professional contract.

Last month brought another milestone, as he scored his first goal for Chelsea Under-21s - a decisive winner in a 2-1 London derby against Arsenal.

Ahead of our latest European test, as Calum McFarlane’s side look to continue our strong form, we caught up with Reggie to learn more about his journey so far, both on and off the pitch.

What would you say are your biggest strengths as a player?

'I’d say my biggest strengths are my football intelligence and my ability to receive the ball in tight spaces under pressure.

'I’m always scanning and looking to play forward, breaking lines and progressing the play. Also, I think my decision-making is something I take pride in. I’s something I’ve worked hard on and I always try to keep it sharp and consistent, especially in high-pressure situations.'

What are you most looking forward to developing more this season?

'This season, I really want to push on with the Under-21s, play consistently in the Premier League 2 and grow my all-round game.

'I'm always wanting to continue to grow and keep working hard. I've been fortunate enough to have opportunities that have only fueled my ambition more. However, I just need to take it day by day.'

What’s your favourite thing about playing in midfield?

'I love being involved in the build-up and connecting the team. Being a midfielder means you’re constantly in the game, whether it’s helping defend, creating chances or dictating the tempo. I enjoy receiving on the half-turn, driving forward and making things happen in the final third. That’s when I feel most natural.'

If someone hasn’t seen you play before, how would you describe your playing style?

'I’d say I’m a creative and intelligent midfielder, very technical with both feet. I like to receive on the turn, play forward and link up the play.

'I’m also confident driving with the ball and making things happen in the final third. Off the ball, I work hard to support defensively and always try to contribute with goals or assists when I can.'

Is there anyone in the men's team you particularly look up to?

'Cole Palmer, for sure. He’s just so creative and unpredictable. He sees the game differently and makes things happen out of nowhere. Watching him closely has been inspiring. He’s a player I try to learn from every time I see him play or train.'

Who are your biggest role models away from the pitch?

'My family. My whole family has sacrificed a lot for me to be in this position and I don’t take that for granted. It motivates me to give everything I’ve got every single day.'

What do you enjoy doing in your free time when you're away from football?

'I think it’s really important to switch off and relax away from the pitch. I like spending time with my little brother, playing PlayStation and to be fair, I’m really into ping-pong as well! We've got a table at home, so we have loads of matches. I’d say I’m a solid eight out of 10… although my brother might say otherwise!'
