As Chelsea Under-18s prepare to host their counterparts from Reading at Cobham tomorrow, which can be watched live on the Chelsea Official App and website, we spoke with full-back Yisa Alao, who joined the Blues in January from Sheffield Wednesday.
The Blues head into the fixture following a hard-fought 1-1 draw away to Under-18 Premier League South leaders Tottenham Hotspur. Mathis Eboue was on the scoresheet, and we remain just four points behind the league leaders as the title race continues to intensify.
We have twice faced Reading this season, claiming a narrow 3-2 victory earlier in our league campaign and securing an impressive 3-1 away win in the Under-18 Premier League Cup in January.
One player determined to play his part in maintaining our momentum is Alao, who joined Chelsea in January. The left-back progressed through Wednesday's academy and made four senior appearances for the Owls this season before completing his switch to the Blues.
Still only 17 years old, Alao has brought valuable experience and composure to the back line, and has strengthened a squad pushing for success in the closing stages of the season.
We sat down with the defender this week to discuss his move to the club, how he has settled into life at Cobham, and how he and his team-mates are preparing for another important league test.
We also took the opportunity to learn more about him both on and off the pitch...
How has it been joining Chelsea?
'It’s been really good. It’s definitely been a bit different from where I was before, but I’ve really enjoyed the experience so far. The level is high and everyone pushes each other to improve, which has helped me settle in quickly. The staff and the players have been really welcoming, so I feel like I’ve adapted well.'
What are your biggest strengths as a player?
'I’d say my biggest strengths are driving forward with the ball and being aggressive in my defending. I like to carry the ball up the pitch when I can and help the team progress. I also pride myself on being strong in aerial duels and having the pace to recover quickly if we lose the ball.'
Is there anything in particular you’re looking to develop in your game for the rest of the season?
'I think the main thing I’m working on is my crossing and my decision-making in the final third. It’s about improving that final action - whether it’s choosing the right cross, pass or move at the right moment. That’s something I’m focusing on as the season goes on.'
How would you describe your playing style?
'I’d describe myself as a hardworking player. I like to give everything in every game, get up and down the pitch and help the team both defensively and going forward. I am definitely a team player.'
What’s your favourite thing about playing as a defender?
'I enjoy the defensive side of the game. I love making tackles, getting blocks in and stopping attacks. Those big defensive moments can feel just as important as scoring a goal.
'I like getting into the aggressive tone and when a game is at a high tempo, I feel like nothing beats that knowing everyone is up for it.'
What type of fixture do you enjoy the most?
'I’d probably say derby matches. They always have a bit more intensity and rivalry, which makes them exciting to play in.
'I also enjoy playing at home. It’s great to play in front of a home crowd because it feels like you have an extra person on the pitch backing you. It really adds something to the game.'
Who do you look up to in football?
'I really look up to Nuno Mendes. I think he’s a very complete full-back. He’s strong defensively but also really good going forward. That balance in his game is something I try to learn from and bring into my own performances.'
Who are your role models away from the pitch?
'Away from football, my dad is a big role model for me. He comes to watch my games and has always supported me throughout my journey. He’s helped me stay focused and keep pushing myself to improve.'
What do you like to do in your free time away from football?
'In my free time, I like to relax and play video games, especially EA FC. I also enjoy spending time with friends and sometimes playing other sports like golf. It’s good to switch off from football for a bit and just have fun.'
