John Terry paid tribute to the memory of Gianluca Vialli when reflecting on a 4-0 win for the Chelsea Legends over our Bayern Munich counterparts at Stamford Bridge last night.
Our legendary former skipper led the side out at Stamford Bridge in our Legends of Europe clash, with the game dedicated to the memory of Vialli – the man who gave JT his Chelsea debut.
The match was a huge success and the fans were delighted with what they saw on the pitch. Chelsea ran out 4-0 winners, with goals coming courtesy of Michael Essien, Terry, Gary Cahill and Tiago, and our former captain’s thoughts moved straight to Luca and his family when reflecting on such a special night.
‘It was absolutely amazing!’ Terry said shortly after the game.
‘It was just an unbelievable night celebrating Luca’s life and it was a great turnout from the supporters so a massive thank you to everyone who turned up and played and for the fans for coming down.
‘Of course, it was a sad night as well but we are here celebrating his life and I think the reception from the fans at the start would have given his family some comfort in knowing that he was an absolute legend and was idolised by everyone.’
It seemed almost poetic that our legendary No.26 would get on the scoresheet not only on 26 minutes but literally the second the clock ticked over and we asked our former captain about that special moment.
‘It’s funny,’ said JT, ‘as I got interviewed at half-time and I was stood exactly here when Luca gave me my debut against Aston Villa a long time ago, so sometimes things are just meant to be.
‘I was delighted to get on the scoresheet and maybe Luca is looking down. It just made for a perfect night.’
All proceeds from the Legends of Europe match are going to the Chelsea Foundation - the club’s charitable foundation - and the Royal Marsden Cancer Charity. The charity supports the work of The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust, where Gianluca Vialli was treated for cancer prior to his death in January.
