On the day we celebrate Chelsea's unique relationship with Brazil with our exclusive documentary, Samba Blues, we reflect on the Brazilian stars who have called Stamford Bridge home over the past 30 years.
Samba Blues, available to watch below, features exclusive interviews with former Blues David Luiz and Thiago Silva and our current Brazilian stars: Andrey Santos, Joao Pedro and Estevao Willian.
In total, 17 Brazilian players have made competitive senior appearances for the Blues. There are others, such as Diego Costa, Jorginho and Emerson Palmieri, who were also born in Brazil but opted to represent European nations at international level.
Going in alphabetical order, here is a recap of the samba stars to have plied their trade in Chelsea blue over the years...
Alex – 134 games, 10 goals
After a three-season loan spell at PSV Eindhoven, Alex made his belated debut for Chelsea in 2007 and quickly proved himself to be one of the most daunting physical presences we have ever had at the heart of our defence.
However, the centre-back was just as famous for his thunderbolt of a shot, resulting in several spectacular free-kick goals, including against Arsenal and Liverpool.
Alexandre Pato – 2 games, 1 goal
The striker joined on loan from Corinthians for the second half of the 2015/16 campaign. He won and scored a penalty in a 4-0 win at Aston Villa on his Chelsea debut, but would make just one more appearance before returning to Brazil at the end of the season.
Juliano Belletti – 94 games, 5 goals
The full-back was already a European champion with Barcelona when he joined Chelsea, and added Premier League and FA Cup honours to his medal collection at Stamford Bridge in our double-winning 2009/10 campaign.
Belletti also won over the fans with a brilliant long-range strike against Tottenham Hotspur, which was named our 2008 Goal of the Season.
David Luiz – 248 games, 18 goals
Across his two spells at Chelsea, David Luiz won the Premier League, FA Cup, UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League (twice) – and ensured his popularity with the fans thanks to his larger-than-life personality.
The defender famously played through the pain barrier while injured to help us win the 2012 Champions League final, scoring in our shootout victory. He was also fond of the occasional wonderstrike, such as against Fulham.
Deivid Washington – 3 games, 0 goals
The forward recently returned from a loan spell with Santos and is currently part of our Under-21s squad.
Deivid's three senior appearances for the Blues so far all came from the bench during the 2023/24 season, including in a 6-0 Premier League thrashing of Everton at Stamford Bridge.
Estevao Willian – 32 games, 7 goals
Estevao arrived at Stamford Bridge last summer with the reputation as one of Brazil’s most exciting young talents, which he firmly cemented by scoring against the Blues at the Club World Cup.
Since arriving at Stamford Bridge, Estevao has lived up to that billing, becoming our youngest Premier League scorer when he netted a dramatic late equaliser against Liverpool. He is also only the third teenager, after Erling Haaland and Kylian Mbappe, to score in his first three Champions League starts.
Joao Pedro – 39 games, 17 goals
The striker arrived midway through the Club World Cup and wasted no time making an impact, scoring twice in the semi-final and another as we defeated Paris Saint-Germain in the final.
Joao Pedro has continued in the same fashion and is currently Chelsea’s top scorer this season, with 14 goals in all competitions.
Kenedy – 30 games, 3 goals
The winger’s Chelsea appearances were split over five seasons and were interspersed by spells on loan elsewhere in the Premier League and abroad.
His first Premier League goal for the Blues opened the scoring in a win over Norwich City after just 39 seconds – it remains the earliest we have ever scored in the competition.
Filipe Luis – 26 games, 1 goal
The full-back spent one season with the Blues in 2014/15 before returning to Atletico Madrid, with Cesar Azpilicueta’s switch to the left restricting his appearances.
However, his contribution was acknowledged when he was brought on late in the win over Crystal Palace, which sealed the Premier League title.
Mineiro – 2 games, 0 goals
The veteran was signed by his compatriot, Luiz Felipe Scolari, aged 33 to provide added cover in the holding midfield role during the 2008/09 campaign, following an injury to Michael Essien.
His only appearances came in a 5-0 Premier League win over Sunderland and a League Cup defeat to Burnley.
Oscar – 203 games, 38 goals
Chelsea were European champions when a young Oscar arrived in 2012, and promptly introduced himself by embarrassing Andrea Pirlo and Gianluigi Buffon to score a brilliant goal, one of two he netted on his full debut against Juventus in the Champions League.
It was the first of many spectacular strikes from the midfielder, who won two Premier League titles with the Blues.
Lucas Piazon – 3 games, 0 goals
Although he was a Chelsea player for nine years, much of that time was spent on loan, and all of Piazon’s senior appearances for the Blues came during the 2012/13 season.
His only Premier League game was certainly memorable, though. Impressing off the bench and setting up Ramires, he was urged to take a penalty himself by his team-mates after being fouled, but was denied by the keeper. We defeated Aston Villa 8-0 regardless.
Ramires – 251 games, 34 goals
The tireless midfielder also featured on the wing at times for Chelsea, but never failed to show his consistency, pace and energy, as well as providing the occasional moment of technical brilliance when his Brazilian roots shone through.
That saw him win Chelsea’s Goal of the Season award in 2011 and 2012, the second for his legendary lob against Barcelona in the Champions League semi-finals.
Andrey Santos – 36 games, 1 goal
After loan spells at Nottingham Forest and Strasbourg, Santos joined the Chelsea senior squad in time to help us win the FIFA Club World Cup in the summer.
The midfielder has since appeared in every competition this season and netted his first Blues goal in the epic 4-3 Carabao Cup win over Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Thiago Silva – 155 games, 9 goals
Already a veteran when he arrived at Chelsea, the evergreen defender defied Father Time to continue as a key player for the Blues into his 40th year.
Thiago provided vital experience and leadership in a young team, became a world and European champion in the process and cemented his place in the hearts of Chelsea supporters.
Emerson Thome – 22 games, 0 goals
The first Brazilian to represent Chelsea joined from Sheffield Wednesday midway through the 1999/00 campaign.
The centre-back found it difficult to break up the established partnership of Marcel Desailly and Frank Leboeuf, but was part of our FA Cup-winning squad before leaving early in the next season.
Willian – 339 games, 63 goals
Like Pato, Willian joined the short list of Brazilians to score on their Premier League debut, when he completed the scoring in a 3-1 win over Norwich City in October 2013.
It was the start of seven happy years with the Blues, during which he won five trophies, including two Premier League titles, as well as being named Chelsea Player of the Year in 2016.
