Chelsea FC Women head into this afternoons Champions League round of 16 second leg against Atletico Madrid with a 2-0 lead and Maren Mjelde says the Blues remain focused on producing another good performance.

Chelsea were reduced to 10 players after just 12 minutes of the first leg but two penalty saves from keeper Ann-Katrin Berger, a converted penalty from Mjelde and a goal from Fran Kirby gave the Blues an important first leg victory at Kingsmeadow.

With Chelsea having a 2-0 advantage going into today’s second leg in Italy, Mjelde expects our Spanish opponents to come out fighting and the Blues defender says the Blues are fully prepared for a resurgent Atletico Madrid.

She said: ‘We know we are in a great position going into the away leg but at the same time it’s an important game for both teams.

‘They need to come at us and win the game, so we are prepared for that.

‘We have to focus on the task and then we will go from there.’

Emma Hayes moved Mjelde to play alongside Millie Bright in the heart of the Blues defence following Sophie Ingle's red card in the first leg.

The Norway international did not look out of place and followed up with a solid performance at centre-back during our Women’s Super League victory against West Ham United on Sunday.

Mjelde believes previous experience in different positions throughout her playing career have helped her to develop into a player who is comfortable playing in any role.

She said: ‘I was playing with the boys till I was 15 and I played a lot of positions when I was playing there.

‘I moved to the senior team and I got to play a lot of positions there so I’ve never had one position.

‘I’ve always been the player who plays where the team needs me to play or where the manager needs me to play.'

The switch to central defence for Mjelde meant a right-back role for Niamh Charles and the 31-year-old says she can draw on her own experiences to help the youngster.

She added: ‘I can put myself in their position. I have my experiences and I’m a bit older now so I know how much it helps players when we communicate and give feedback during the game.

‘For Niamh coming in, it was probably nerve-racking for her to come into a game where we had gone down to one less player.

‘If she can get help from me and the players around her she will feel more safe and do her thing.

‘She is an incredible footballer and I think she showed everyone that on Wednesday.’

Today’s game kicks off at 12.30pm UK time and will be available to watch on this website and the 5th Stand app (excluding UK and Spain). In the UK it is live on BT Sport.
