In adversity, the Chelsea players stuck together and rose to the challenge this week. That was the message Calum McFarlane wanted to highlight after our 1-1 draw with Manchester City.
McFarlane, our Under-21s head coach who took charge of the team at the Etihad, acknowledged it had been a testing few days in the wake of Enzo Maresca’s departure.
However, the manner of the players’ response in training and then during a hard-fought, richly-deserved draw against Man City showed how united they are on and off the pitch.
‘There is a lot of change that has gone on, and the character they’ve shown in the last few days speaks volumes,’ said McFarlane.
‘Reece [James], Tosin, Enzo [Fernandez] have really dragged the group together. Everyone thought we were coming to Man City and didn’t stand a chance, but we knew the talent and the character in this group. I can’t speak highly enough of the characters in the group.
‘All the lads that are injured and suspended are here,’ added McFarlane of the unavailable players being present at the Etihad.
‘Levi [Colwill] is here. They are supporting the lads in the changing room; they are around it. You don’t get that everywhere. They care so much about this group and the players and their mates.
‘We have had everything against us, but this group has shown when their backs are against the wall, they have the talent and character to be successful. I’m really proud of the whole group.’
Robert Sanchez and Wesley Fofana were two of those who did not feature against City having started the Bournemouth game in midweek. McFarlane updated on their status.
‘Rob pulled out yesterday. He felt his injury in the warm-up against Bournemouth, he played through it, and he trained on Friday. Yesterday in training it just didn’t feel right.
‘We were trying to get him through, and then Wes pulled out at lunchtime today with a really high temperature.’
