Chelsea Foundation coach Tyrone Reid took part in the 2021/22 FA Mentee Development Programme and is encouraging others to apply to be part of the next cohort.
The programme, supported by Chelsea Foundation, is aimed at addressing opportunities for female coaches and coaches from Black, Asian and underrepresented backgrounds. The initiative provides 10 participants with a season-long placement focused on accelerating their development and helping them break into the professional game, with each coach receiving a bespoke and agile programme.
Reid briefly took time out of football before joining the programme and now credits it for inspiring him to stay in the game.
‘During Covid I had some time out of football,’ he said, ‘but being able to take part in this eye-opening experience and purposeful work was a big inspiration for me to get back into football. To be able to see more deeper into the professional game was really useful and inspiring.’
During the programme, Reid visited Brentford, Crystal Palace, Watford, Liverpool and spent time with the England U20 training camp. Away from coaching, Tyrone also spent time with matchday analysts which included covering live analysis of a fixture between Chelsea and Arsenal at Stamford Bridge, as well as meeting with the League Managers Association and a session focused on best practice in interviews and presentations.
‘One of the best parts for me was how to best conduct yourself in an interview or presentation, and I think many others were thoroughly surprised by that. To finish the course we had to deliver a presentation as part of a graduation evening at St George’s Park, so it was great to take on those skills we had learnt previously and was definitely a highlight for me.’
Reid now delivers the Premier League Primary Stars programme for Chelsea Foundation and would recommend the course to any Chelsea Foundation colleagues.
‘There’s so much networking that comes part of being on the programme which is vital,’ he said. ‘It’s great that a club like Chelsea are able to support such an inspiring initiative and it is something not to be missed.’
